Twitter suspends ~30 accounts sharing private jets' locations via public data, including @ElonJet, which Elon Musk had said he wouldn't ban for tracking his jet
Twitter Inc. has suspended multiple accounts that track the locations of private jets using publicly available flight data …
Bloomberg
Context & Ripple Effects
Twitter’s removal of @ElonJet followed an earlier suspension of the jet-tracking bot and conflicts with Elon Musk’s stated commitment not to ban it. The broader action against roughly 30 accounts turns an account-specific dispute into enforcement affecting a category of public-data tracking.
The policy basis arrived alongside the suspensions: Twitter’s revised private-information rules prohibit accounts dedicated to sharing another person’s live location. That change redraws the line between data that is public elsewhere and content Twitter will distribute.
First-order effects
- @ElonJet and similar flight-tracking accounts lose access to Twitter despite relying on publicly available flight data, while Twitter gains a stated rule for removing live-location feeds.
- Elon Musk’s prior pledge becomes a visible credibility test for Twitter’s moderation policy, because the new enforcement directly covers the account he had singled out.
Second-order effects
- Operators seeking to continue flight tracking have an incentive to change the product format rather than the underlying data: Jack Sweeney later used a 24-hour-delayed version of @ElonJet.
- Twitter’s policy shifts moderation disputes from whether flight data is public to whether the platform treats its real-time redistribution as prohibited personal-location content.
Third-order effects
- If platforms increasingly distinguish public availability from permitted redistribution, access to public data will no longer by itself determine whether tracking services can reach audiences on major social networks.
- The episode points to a more platform-defined public-data permission boundary, where safety rationales and enforcement consistency become central to trust in moderation rules.
The trend: Social platforms are narrowing real-time distribution of public personal-location data, separating data visibility from platform permission to amplify it.
