Meta lets select Instagram creators in the US test a toolkit for minting NFTs and selling them on and off the platform, and says it won't charge fees until 2024

Instagram will soon have NFT creation and trading tools built in, but in-app purchases will be “subject to applicable app store fees.”

Decrypt Kate Irwin

Context & Ripple Effects

Meta first tested Instagram digital-collectible sharing with select US creators, then expanded viewing to all Instagram users in 100 countries through its broader collectibles-sharing rollout. The new creator tools move the product from displaying existing NFTs toward making and transacting them inside Instagram.

Facebook had already added a dedicated NFT profile tab for select US creators in Meta's Facebook NFT expansion, making Instagram the next surface where Meta is connecting creator identity, publishing and commerce.

First-order effects

  • Selected US Instagram creators can mint NFTs and sell them both within and beyond Instagram, while Meta forgoes its own sales fee until 2024.
  • Buyers using in-app checkout remain subject to applicable app-store fees, so the no-fee offer does not eliminate transaction costs.

Second-order effects

  • Meta's creator proposition shifts from free NFT sharing, tested earlier in Instagram's initial collectibles pilot, to an end-to-end workflow that can keep creation and sales activity closer to its platform.
  • App-store fee rules become a practical constraint on Instagram's in-app NFT commerce, separating Meta's temporary take-rate decision from the cost of mobile distribution.

Third-order effects

  • If Meta extends the pilot, social platforms may compete for creators by embedding monetization into publishing workflows rather than limiting NFT support to profile displays and sharing.
  • The rollout points to platform take rates being shaped jointly by social networks' creator incentives and mobile-app payment rules, rather than by marketplaces alone.

The trend: Social platforms are evolving NFT features from identity and sharing tools into workflow-native creator commerce, with mobile payment fees setting the economics of in-app sales.
