Hands-on with Meta Quest 3: an iterative update, but its mixed reality pass through video is less grainy than the Quest Pro and offers color, unlike the Quest 2

Adi Robertson / The Verge :

The Verge Adi Robertson

Context & Ripple Effects

Meta had already positioned Quest 3 as a $500 mainstream mixed-reality headset, following the Quest Pro's color-passthrough and tracking-focused premium design. Early prototype coverage had also flagged a thinner, faster device with better video passthrough than Quest 2.

This hands-on adds a practical quality comparison: color passthrough is now available below the Pro tier, and the image is reported as less grainy. That matters because Meta's mixed-reality pitch depends on the camera view being usable in ordinary headset interactions, not merely present as a feature.

First-order effects

  • Quest 3 gives prospective buyers a clearer color view of their surroundings than Quest 2 and a less-grainy passthrough experience than Quest Pro, strengthening its appeal as Meta's current consumer-focused headset.
  • The result validates the direction previewed in Meta's $500 Quest 3 announcement: mixed reality is being presented as a mainstream product capability rather than a premium-only differentiator.

Second-order effects

  • Quest Pro's color passthrough becomes less distinctive for buyers whose priority is mixed reality, while Quest 2's monochrome passthrough looks increasingly dated within Meta's own lineup.
  • Developers have a larger incentive to target Quest 3's color-passthrough hardware, but the value of that shift still depends on applications making meaningful use of mixed reality rather than treating it as a visual upgrade.

Third-order effects

  • If color passthrough continues moving into lower-priced headsets, headset competition will increasingly turn on camera quality, comfort, performance, and mixed-reality software—not VR display specs alone.
  • The transition also raises the bar for the ecosystem: mainstream mixed reality will require useful, repeatable software experiences, since improved passthrough quality by itself does not establish sustained demand.

The trend: Mixed reality is shifting from a premium headset feature toward a baseline consumer capability, with product differentiation moving to the quality of passthrough and the software built around it.

Alright, so the pass-through on the new @metaquest 3 is MILES better than the Quest Pro - clarity, color correction and saturation, little-to-no warping, and you can actually see your phone screen (and other screens).

Hands on with the new Quest 3: More MEH-taverse The price is way better than Apple, but there are no new ideas here about why we'd want to wear a face computer or how it can be less awkward to use: https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ...

I tried the Quest 3 headset.  The video pass-through seems quite good, but it's a little hard to tell as I was wearing one with prescription lenses that were supposedly as close as they could get to my actual glasses.  Still a lot blurrier than real life.

@midjourney ... The comfort and ergonomics of Quest 3 are VASTLY improved. The Red Matter demo is absolutely stunning. Two of mixed reality apps had subtle warping of ground that was unsettling. Controllers lighter & awesome haptics. Overall a big upgrade of performance & capabil…

I was very lucky to go hands on early with the Quest 3 last week. I left really impressed with the headsets increased performance and pancake lenses. It's definitely a worthy upgrade from Quest 2! Check out my full first impressions video here 👀 [image]

I got to see the #Quest3 already! TLDR; holy crap what an upgrade from the Quest 2. Seriously substantial differences that are well worth upgrading for. https://www.androidcentral.com/ ...

I can say now that I've been hands on with Quest 3 recently. Very impressed by the upgrade being offered so far. Need more time with the headset but the new games are looking strong, feels like a good halfway point between PC VR/PSVR 2 and Quest 2. [image]

Didn't talk much about Quest 3 controllers in my hands-on because I didn't get to really put them through their paces. However, now without the tracking rings, the shape and weight feel so good now that the center of gravity is more central. [image]

I got to put my big bald head into the Meta Quest 3! The mixed reality stuff is awesome, and there are lots of nice quality of life upgrades that I've wanted for a while. Here are some early thoughts: https://www.cnn.com/... [image]
