Revolut launches a one-click payment feature, starting with Shopify, Prestashop, WH Smith, and others

Revolut Ltd. is launching a one-click payment feature in a bid to rival PayPal Inc. and other tech giants at online checkouts.  —  Revolut Pay has signed up retailers including Shopify Inc. …

Context & Ripple Effects

Revolut has been building toward the merchant side for two years: its 2020 launch of online payment acceptance for business clients put it in the card-processing business at a 1.3% UK/EU take rate, and now Revolut Pay extends that from back-end processing to the consumer-facing checkout button itself.

The move lands on contested ground — PayPal took its own One Touch instant checkout global starting with the UK back in 2015, while Shopify has been pushing its Shop Pay one-click checkout beyond its own platform to merchants on Facebook and Google since mid-2021. Signing Shopify, Prestashop, WH Smith, and Funky Pigeon gives Revolut distribution inside that same checkout war.

First-order effects

  • PayPal faces a direct challenger at UK and European online checkouts, where Revolut Pay's one-click button competes with One Touch for the same saved-credential convenience.

Second-order effects

  • Shopify gains a second major wallet option alongside its own Shop Pay, strengthening its hand in negotiating checkout terms, while Prestashop and mid-market retailers like WH Smith get leverage over incumbent processor pricing.

Third-order effects

  • If Revolut pairs Revolut Pay with its published 1.3%/2.8% merchant fee schedule, checkout economics shift from card-network pricing toward wallet-operator pricing — a structural contest over who owns the merchant take rate.

The trend: Online checkout is consolidating around branded one-click wallets — PayPal, Shop Pay, and now Revolut Pay — turning the merchant-side take rate into the next battleground for fintech platforms.
