Source: the space between the iPhone 14 Pro display's pill and hole-shaped cutouts will be bridged by software and show microphone and camera privacy indicators

The big Apple news of the day is that the iPhone 14 Pro will apparently use software to make the two new display cutouts look like one seamless cutout.

9to5Mac Chance Miller

Context & Ripple Effects

Earlier coverage framed the iPhone 14 Pro as moving from the notch to separate pill and circular openings. Apple is now reported to be treating that hardware change as a UI surface, a direction later expressed through the Dynamic Island’s call, timer, and navigation controls.

The reported software bridge matters because it turns an unavoidable display interruption into a place for persistent camera and microphone status, rather than leaving two isolated cutouts.

First-order effects

  • Apple can present the iPhone 14 Pro’s two physical openings as one coordinated interface area, with microphone and camera privacy indicators integrated into that space.
  • iPhone 14 Pro users get system-status information in the display region created by the new cutout layout.

Second-order effects

  • The iPhone 14 Pro’s display change becomes a software-and-hardware distinction from the earlier anticipated shift away from the notch, not simply a revised front-camera layout.
  • Apple gains a reusable system UI area for the call, timer, and navigation elements documented in subsequent Dynamic Island coverage.

Third-order effects

  • If Apple continues replacing visible display hardware with software-managed UI, its reported under-screen Face ID roadmap points to a staged reduction of front-display interruptions rather than a single redesign.
  • Apple’s iPhone interface is moving toward making physical sensor constraints legible as interactive system software, concentrating more of the product’s differentiation in the OS layer.

The trend: Apple is progressively using software UI to smooth the transition from prominent display cutouts toward less visible front-facing hardware.

This is true. It looks like one wide pill shaped cutout. Having that separation would look odd during use. https://twitter.com/...

Since we're changing the shape of the iPhone 14 Pro cutout last minute, here's a few more designs for you consideration: https://twitter.com/...

Ok now THIS makes sense! They left the space open so they could show those indicators. If they blacked out the section between both cutouts on the actual display panel glass itself, you wouldn't be able to see those indicators, if that's what they're planning! https://twitter.com…

Is this better than a notch? https://twitter.com/...

Not a perfect comparison, but here's a rough idea of what the long pill will look like on the iPhone 14 Pro, compared to the iPhone 13 Pro. 6.1" iPhones used for comparison. https://twitter.com/...

Realistically, here's how I see them using the space on iPhone 14 Pro. They will probably just shift the existing controls in camera at the top of the screen upwards and align it with the new pill. And the pill still looks better than the notch with the extra pixels above it... h…

Very proud of @MacRumors. ✅ MacBook Pro notch rumor a few days before event, was correct despite people calling us crazy for reporting it. ✅ One pill-shape cutout for the iPhone 14 Pro when in use very likely to be correct. 🤝 https://twitter.com/...

More evidence suggests this will be the ACTUAL look of the iPhone 14 Pro cutout 😳‼️ The space in between will apparently be used to show privacy indicators for active mics/cameras... https://twitter.com/...

iOS 16 medication reminders recommends one dose of the iPhone 14 pill.

For Apple's most-leaked product line, this is a pretty crazy last-minute bombshell. Can only imagine what Apple folks have been thinking all these months as people have been visualizing it all wrong. https://twitter.com/...

Wow. Mark Gurman says the rumor about the iPhone 14 Pro's pill-and-hole cutouts looking like one singular pill-shaped cutout (via software) during usage of the device is true. I love last-minute rumors. https://twitter.com/...

It looks like the iPhone 14 Pro's pill shaped cutout (with or without a hole punch) will also show you when your camera and microphone are in use https://www.imore.com/... https://twitter.com/...

I'm seeing some hate on the wide pill, but it looks fine to me - I think a lot of us are disappointed rn because we've been used to the pill + hole design with the plethora of renders we've seen for months, but the official renders will probably change most people's minds https:/…

A source said 2 weeks ago the iPhone display had a pill+hole. If, for whatever reason, it's just a long pill, that's just software and was decided a few days ago at best. I'm a bit skeptical because I don't see the point in over engineering that just to kill it with software.
