The UK proposes an Online Safety Bill amendment forcing tech companies to remove CSAM or Ofcom will fine them up to £18M or 10% of their annual turnover

Amendment to online safety bill would require tech firms to make their ‘best endeavours’ to deploy new technology

The Guardian Dan Milmo

🚨 JUST IN | The UK Govt may designate ‘foreign interference’ as a priority offence under the #OnlineSafetyBill “The government will table an amendment to link the National Security Bill with the Online Safety Bill”. Dangerous. This Bill has to go. https://www.gov.uk/...

Historic! 🗳✅ Congratulations to the European Parliament for adopting both the #DSA & #DMA today. It's a landslide vote! https://twitter.com/...

I welcome the @Europarl_EN's adoption of our #EU rulebook for digital services: #DSA tackles illegal and harmful online content. #DMA subjects gatekeepers to do's and don'ts to keep markets open. The @EU_Commission will be the digital regulator for the biggest platforms. https://…

Commissioner Breton revealed some details on the #DMA & #DSA enforcement. DG CNECT will set up thematic teams. The societal one will cover risk assessment & audits, the technical team interoperability & standards, the economic one FRAND and data access. https://www.linkedin.com/.…

1/5 @Europarl_EN approved the #DigitalServicesAct with 539 votes in favour. EDRi welcomes DSA's attempt to enable a real transformation of online advertising industry, away from cheating & spying on users & towards a safer, privacy-respecting ad ecosystem. https://edri.org/... ht…

The DSA and DMA fix the biggest bug in the GDPR, it hurt smaller companies more than the big tech companies the EU wanted to hurt via protectionism. DSA and DMA fix that by explicitly targeting American big tech companies. Truly agile lawmaking by the EU. https://www.reuters.com/…

For the 1st time ever, the European Commission will become the #supervisor of “gatekeepers” and very large platforms & online search engines. Here is a sneak preview of how the #DSA & #DMA enforcement will be organised 🔜 https://www.linkedin.com/...

Yes! Today @Europarl_EN adopted #DSA & #DMA regulations: 🇪🇺strong, ambitious & global first rulebook of #online platforms. Now I'm looking forward to the adoption by @EUCouncil Congratulations to all of us 🥳 https://europa.eu/!vcx4W8 https://twitter.com/...

The DSA is a promising step forward. It introduces measures to increase platforms' transparency, requires them to explain how they moderate content, to assess & mitigate systemic risks, access to data for researchers & reins in some invasive forms of surveillance-based ads 2/
  • @eric_seufert Eric Seufert on x
The wording in this DMA provision (#44) is vague, but it seems to prevent the cross-utilization of data when a platform operator also sells advertising. If this interpretation is correct: does the DMA prohibit Apple from using install & in-app purchase data for ads targeting? htt…

@TimSweeneyEpic @aurelienportues Hold on, as you know from your recent Epic v Apple escapade, first you have to prove there is a monopoly 🙂
  • @timsweeneyepic Tim Sweeney on x
@laz_radic @aurelienportues This feels like disingenuous propaganda to me, as monopoly advocates switch seamlessly between arguments that Apple and Google monopolies create awesome consumer welfare, and that antitrust law must be solely based on the consumer welfare standard.

Big Tech threw millions at their fight vs our reforms - €27m in just 1 year in fact. But though they're some of the most powerful Corps ever, there's 1 thing they don't have: people power The #DSA is proof positive, people can fight for a better internet and future...and WIN http…
  • @edri @edri on x
4/5 If #DSA is implemented right, it can guarantee transparency, accountability & put people's interests at the core of the solutions. It can limit the power Big Tech companies like Google, Meta & Amazon have over people BUT more work is needed for a better internet.
  • @jimsteyer Jim Steyer on x
Today European lawmakers have taken a big step towards making the internet safer for kids by adopting the #DigitalServicesAct. Lawmakers here at home need to act swiftly to protect our kids and our democratic future. #DSA https://twitter.com/...

The DMA is the first legislation around the world to reset the lines on mobile browser competition, and while there will be a lot of fighting ahead, this will be the biggest change in software in more than a decade. https://www.reuters.com/...
  • @deblebrown Deborah Brown on x
Additionally, since the DSA will require very large platforms (like Meta & Google) to be more transparent & provide remedies to EU users, the measures they put in place to comply w/the DSA should be extended to people who rely on their platforms/services around the world. 5/
  • @bertuzluca Luca Bertuzzi on x
@MDemircan_ My understanding is that DG COMP will still do the case handling, while DG CNECT will provide the technical expertise. A 50/50 split of staff is expected.
  • @timsweeneyepic Tim Sweeney on x
@laz_radic @aurelienportues The implication of all of this advocacy would be that all extant tech monopolies get a free pass to avoid antitrust scrutiny.
  • @laz_radic Lazar Radic on x
15/20 Last but not least, the DMA will inevitably face its fair share of unintended consequences. For instance, as @MBarczentewicz has often argued, the DMA's broad interoperability mandates will likely compromise user privacy & security. https://truthonthemarket.com/ ...[...]

If you create complex laws that require an army of bureaucrats to comply with them, then you bias the industry to companies that can hire armies of bureaucrats. Now with DMA & DSA, only big tech companies have to hire the bureaucrats or risk major fines. https://twitter.com/...
  • @stroughtonsmith Steve Troughton-Smith on x
I feel like setting this precedent now is essential before Apple pivots all of its attention to AR and building its next huge, world-changing platform. The future of computing can not anticompetitively, illegally stack the deck in Apple's favor https://twitter.com/...
  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on x
Still leaves giant questions (it's far from clear this is compatible with E2EE), makes no product sense and doesn't solve any actual consumer or competition problem, but the previous version was just idiotic and should never have been published.
  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on x
The latest public version of the EU's DMA rule on messaging interoperability is somewhat less insane. The original version said you had to allow *any* app, from anyone, not just to connect, but to have complete and unlimited access to all user data. https://t.co/VS15ws3YPW https:…

If we want to achieve a user-centric experience, we need to user-test, involving 3rd-parties in the process. This will be our key message to regulators, gatekeepers abd consumer orgs are the DMA and other similar regulations across the world roll out.
