Apple rolls out iOS 15.4 with the ability to use Face ID while wearing a mask, and iPadOS 15.4 with Universal Control, which requires macOS Monterey 12.3

iPadOS 15.4 has also launched with Universal Control support  —  iOS 15.4, the latest version of Apple's iPhone operating system …

Universal Control is a very exciting feature. Looking forward to trying it out and using my old iPad Pro as 2nd screen https://twitter.com/...

iOS and iPadOS 15.4 are out today! These are two big mid-cycle updates that bring Universal Control for iPad and Face ID with a Mask for iPhone. Here is my story on everything that is new in 15.4, including Shortcuts changes and hidden settings. https://www.macstories.net/... htt…

Now that iOS 15.4 is out, attention turns to iOS 15.5 — which will be released around WWDC.
  • @jeangembre1 Jean on x
Apple decided to release their iOS update that includes Face ID detection with a mask on right at the end of the pandemic 🥲
  • @stroughtonsmith Steve Troughton-Smith on x
I've kept a baseline of macOS 11 when adding all the new keyboard navigation stuff on macOS 12, and that's been a little painful. It would be nice to streamline that before the WWDC cycle, especially when there's no TestFlight on macOS 11

@viticci Hang on, what? Face ID with a mask is not available for iPad Pro 2021?! It's Face ID optics & capabilities should easily be as recent as the iPhone 12's, shouldn't they? Really disappointing... 🥺
  • @stroughtonsmith Steve Troughton-Smith on x
Checking over my App Store analytics just to see if it's time to drop support for macOS 11 or iOS 14 yet — on both Broadcasts & Pastel, macOS 11 usage is down <5%, and iOS 14 <3%. Not changing requirements yet, but I would feel comfortable moving to iOS 15/macOS 12-only by summer
  • @stroughtonsmith Steve Troughton-Smith on x
In contrast, Grace, which still has a minimum iOS requirement of iOS 8, has iOS 9.3 and iOS 12.5 as the two primary platform versions, bigger by far than any newer OS 👀 That's no small backwards-compatibility burden https://twitter.com/...

Three weeks since I last wore a mask, Apple releases Face ID Mask Unlock 😒 This should have been released with the iPhone 12 in October 2020, not two years after the pandemic started. https://twitter.com/...
  • @danbenjamin Dan Benjamin on x
Just in time for Phase 2 where masks are no longer required most places. https://twitter.com/...
  • @marioguzman @marioguzman on x
I believe masks mandates are coming back in the near future. Also, some of us will still wear masks even though mask mandates have been lifted. So sure, Apple released updated Face ID with Mask usage support but this is for some of us now, and all of us in the near future.

I've been using iOS 15.4 for over a month, and having Face ID that works with a mask rocks. Just remember to bring your phone up to eye level! https://www.theverge.com/...

Okay, now with all my devices updated, I'm here to confirm that macOS -> iOS ‘Universal Control’ is legitimately the most holy-shit, mind-blowing thing Apple has pulled off in years. Honestly, maybe ever. It's that well done.
  • @mgsiegler M.G. Siegler on x
It's one of those things that seems like it can't possibly work as well as it does. And yet it does. It's the promise of “it just works” epitomized. It's something that probably a hundred little bits of software have made possible over years of tweaks to macOS and iOS. It's WILD.

    UNIVERSAL CONTROL IS LIFE CHANGING

Universal control on my Mac to my iPad is insanity. So seamless.... And no this is not an ad just an observation. Now let's see if I actually use the feature.

If I were on the Safari team at Apple, I'd use all my social capital decouple Safari updates from macOS / iOS. Otherwise, it's just a losing battle.

universal control is finally working(!!) and this is the only thing that made it worth dealing with Monterey and iOS 15 bugs
  • @mgsiegler M.G. Siegler on x
When you describe it, it can sound ho-hum. So... a second monitor? But it's a second monitor that runs iOS (or macOS as it works both ways!). And you can just instantly and seamlessly navigate the two. It breaks your brain not because it's complex but because it's so simple.

Universal control is as good as Apple marketed it! Personally going to imporve a ton of my workflows!! https://twitter.com/...
  • @can @can on x
There's no winning the developer mindshare (hello!) when your best bet for your bugs to be fixed is OS level updates that are also tied to hardware updates.
  • @can @can on x
And don't even get me started on the security side of things!

(As I type this, I'm editing on an HDR mini-LED display on my MacBook Pro, with an HDR mini-LED display on the iPad Pro as a second screen, that I can now use as Sidecar for Final Cut or with Universal Control for every iPad app. It's silly terrific.) https://twitter.com/...
  • @dsilverman Dwight Silverman on x
It is pretty damned cool. I was slinging my iMac cursor across the screens of my iPad and MacBook Pro. I just wish I could control my Macs with my iPhone. But no. Maybe in iOS 16....? https://twitter.com/...
  • @stroughtonsmith Steve Troughton-Smith on x
Universal Control is rather neat. Unfortunately dragged UIColors don't automatically map to NSColors on macOS, so Pastel for iOS can't drag into an AppKit app for example, but you *can* drag from Pastel for iOS into Pastel for macOS (which supports both)
  • @kirkburgess @kirkburgess on x
“Universal Control” between MacBook & iPad is amazing. Killer Feature.
  • @reneritchie Rene Ritchie on x
iOS 8 brought Extensibility and Continuity. At the time, I thought they were the most important developments for Apple OS since iOS I may have been underestimating them https://twitter.com/...
