Clearview AI CEO says Ukraine is using its facial recognition tech, with 2B+ images from Russia's VKontakte, for free to identify Russian attackers and the dead

Ukraine's defense ministry on Saturday began using Clearview AI's facial recognition technology, the company's chief executive told Reuters …

“Identify the dead” in a war zone was the last thing I thought Clearview would be used for, but here we are. https://twitter.com/...

Clearview AI, which never fails to insert itself in major news events, says its software is being used by Ukraine's defense ministry. It's said in the past that its facial recognition could help with contact tracing for COVID and identify Jan 6. rioters: https://www.reuters.com/.…

You can hardly blame Ukraine for not worrying about ethics. Clearview OTOH.. https://www.reuters.com/...

This is grotesque. As I told @JLDastin at @Reuters, this is going to be a deadly mistake. When police #FacialRecognition makes mistakes we see innocent people wrongly arrested. When military face scans are wrong, civilians will get killed. #Ukraine https://www.reuters.com/...

“Ukraine is receiving free access to Clearview AI's powerful search engine for faces, letting authorities potentially vet people of interest at checkpoints” https://www.reuters.com/...

It's possible Ukraine could be using Clearview, but I would hesitate at taking its CEO, who has a history of exaggerating (i.e. previously claiming the software is 100% accurate), at his word. It's also unclear *how* Ukraine is using it, even if there are potential use cases.

Dystopic news all around. More so from companies that like to massively oversell their under-capabilities. Using facial recognition during wartime should be...a war crime in itself! “Ukraine has started using Clearview AI's facial recognition during war” https://www.reuters.com/.…

Clearview told Ukraine's government that it had more than 2 billion images from the Russian social media service VKontakte at its disposal. The startup said it could help Ukraine identify the dead more easily than trying to match fingerprints and even if faces were damaged.

Exactly how Ukraine's government is applying the tech is unclear. However, one critic warned about deadly consequences if facial recognition were to misidentify people at checkpoints or in battle.

Ukraine uses Clearview's face recognition during war. Potential uses: “vet people of interest at checkpoints”, “help identify the dead more easily than trying to match fingerprints”, “identify Russian operatives”. Important to track for false positives... https://www.reuters.com/…

Ukraine defense ministry using Clearview's controversial AI facial recognition tech to help identify Russian assailants and the dead. Ukraine also receiving free access to Clearview's search engine for faces to vet people of interest at checkpoints. https://www.reuters.com/...

Also worth noting the regulatory environment around Clearview, which is currently facing multimillion dollar fines in the UK and Italy for violating data protection and privacy rules. It's looking for goodwill and the normalization of facial recognition technology.

A few days ago I joked that ‘if NSO wants to clear its public image it should offer its services to the Ukrainian government.’ Guess Clearview's marketing department was faster 🤣😂 https://www.reuters.com/...

I'll bet you five bucks that Clearview's creepy CEO emailed some guy in Ukraine asking if they wanted to try out his facial recognition software and the guy replied something like “idk bro maybe we're kind of at war rn” and then Clearview's PR team sent Reuters this press release…
