GSC Game World decides to “cancel anything NFT-related” in its game Stalker 2 after fans criticize its plans for in-game NFTs in partnership with DMarket

It hasn't been a great week for the GSC Game World team  —  STALKER 2 developers GSC Game World announced yesterday that they'd be adding NFTs to the game.

Kotaku Luke Plunkett

Context & Ripple Effects

GSC Game World's reversal sits at the leading edge of a broader gaming-community resistance to NFT features: later coverage describes fierce player backlash to publishers' NFT plans, rooted in resentment of expanding in-game monetization. Subsequent coverage of NFT gaming's troubled 2022 shows that early interest from major publishers did not translate into a broadly accepted game category.

For GSC Game World, abandoning the DMarket-linked feature preserves the game from becoming a test case for that conflict; for DMarket, it removes a high-profile prospective in-game integration.

First-order effects

  • GSC Game World drops NFT-related functionality from Stalker 2, ending the immediate source of fan criticism around the planned DMarket partnership.
  • DMarket loses the planned Stalker 2 use case, while players no longer face NFT features as part of the game's offering.

Second-order effects

  • Other game publishers considering NFT integrations face clearer evidence that player reaction can force a rapid retreat, raising the reputational cost of attaching tokenized assets to established franchises.
  • NFT-game vendors must rely less on partnerships with conventional game releases as publishers weigh the monetization opportunity against community backlash.

Third-order effects

  • The episode points toward a split between conventional games, where NFT mechanics face a high acceptance bar, and a narrower NFT-game segment—an outcome consistent with later coverage describing the category as niche and scam-filled.
  • As token-market infrastructure also retrenches, including GameStop's planned NFT-marketplace shutdown over regulatory uncertainty, game publishers have less incentive to make blockchain features central to their releases.

The trend: Gaming's early NFT push is giving way to a more selective market in which player acceptance and platform viability constrain integrations into mainstream titles.

Dear Stalkers, we hear you. Based on the feedback we received, we've made a decision to cancel anything NFT-related in S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2. The interests of our fans and players are the top priority for the team. We're making this game for you to enjoy - whatever the cost is. If you …

Wow, that was fast. - STALKER 2 devs aren't doing NFTs anymore because enough people raged on Twitter. NFTs in games has become an extremely polarizing topic. - Is the NFT community aware of all the backlash in the gaming space right now? https://twitter.com/...

I hope the whole industry listens. The one universally rejected thing in all of gaming has been NFTs. Some hate loot boxes, but some like them. Some hate microtransactions, some like them. Season pass love/hate. But EVERYONE hates NFT's in our video games. Too easy to scam. https…

Talk about a canary in the coalmine for other studios who are thinking of raising funds through NFTs. I can understand why they'd give it a go - making games is expensive. But the reaction from fans has been loud and clear. Keep this shit out of our games. https://twitter.com/...

I am surprised at how strongly the PC gaming community is anti-NFT. They give many reasons why but I suspect the real reason is that they view it as 1) a money grab 2) a distraction from the core game mechanic. https://twitter.com/...

Gamers have made it very clear that they hate NFTs cc: @cdixon https://twitter.com/...

Glad to see they yanked them and I feel their budget pain. But players of the game get nothing out of NFTs and after decades of chasing gold farmers out, no one wants them invited back in for the sake of the game. https://twitter.com/...

The STALKER 2 team tried to explain their decision to include NFT scam shit after the massive backlash yesterday, doubled down on them and then deleted the tweet in less than 30 mins lmao https://twitter.com/...

For fuck's sake, stop with this. Please. This will eventually ruin the hobby. Nobody wants to play a game where one of the NPCs is some rich arsehole with more money than sense. This is greedy people selling shit to greedy people. Nobody else wants it. https://www.videogameschron…

@stalker_thegame Seriously, thanks for taking into consideration what we've been saying. This series doesn't need to be bruised by NFT bullshite, keep it clean, keep it cheeki breeki.
  • @theishikawarin @theishikawarin on x
Why does this keep happening? Why do developers of a potentially great thing have to ruin it with crypto-related bullshit, ESPECIALLY the massive NFT scam. We can't have anything nice anymore, I'm sick of it. I was looking forward to STALKER 2 so much as a Metro fan.

@stalker_thegame Awesome - thanks. Excellent description from Reddit for anyone that doesn't know why NFTs suck: 1/2 https://twitter.com/...

What's funny is that this isn't a blockchain game so they could just do what they wanted without the NFT part. There is nothing stopping them from adding NPCs to the game based on people paying for that perk. https://twitter.com/...
  • @duskdev David Szymanski on x
This 180 implies that they WEREN'T aware that NFTs would cause such an uproar which is... very weird to me https://twitter.com/...
