Twitter rolls out automatic video captions, with support for over 30 languages, but not for previously uploaded videos

Starting today, Twitter is rolling out auto-generated captions on videos.  This feature will make videos more accessible for Deaf and hard-of-hearing users.

TechCrunch Amanda Silberling

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter is extending its accessibility tooling from auto-captions for voice tweets in 11 languages to video captions across more than 30 languages. The change brings Twitter’s video experience into the same product area where TikTok had begun rolling out automatic captions and Instagram had introduced a captions sticker.

The rollout applies to newly uploaded videos rather than the existing archive, making it an incremental platform capability rather than a retroactive accessibility upgrade.

First-order effects

  • Deaf and hard-of-hearing Twitter users gain captions on newly uploaded videos in more than 30 languages, while creators must re-upload older clips to make them caption-accessible.
  • Twitter’s video publishing workflow now includes automated accessibility support, but previously uploaded videos remain outside the feature’s reach.

Second-order effects

  • TikTok and Instagram face a clearer baseline for caption support across multilingual social video, after each had already introduced its own captioning tools.
  • Creators distributing the same video across platforms can increasingly treat captions as a standard publishing requirement, while older Twitter video libraries retain an accessibility gap.

Third-order effects

  • The sequence of caption launches points to automated transcription becoming table stakes in social-video infrastructure rather than a differentiated add-on.
  • If platforms continue expanding language coverage, accessibility features will be judged not only by availability but also by whether they cover back catalogs as well as new uploads.

The trend: Social platforms are standardizing automated, multilingual captions as video becomes a core publishing format and accessibility expectation.

Where are video captions when you need them? They're here now automatically on videos uploaded starting today. Android & iOS: auto-captions will show on muted Tweet videos; keep them on when unmuted via your device's accessibility settings Web: use the “CC” button to turn on/off …

This is awesome BUT still not an excuse to not provide proper captions if you're able to do so. Auto-captions are better than nothing and the best social media platforms can offer. It's on users to take it further and edit their own. https://twitter.com/...

Please. PLEASE Do NOT use this a replacement for providing manually created subtitles/captions (Baked in or SRT) Auto craptions can only fill a void so much, put in that extra effort and include more of your followers (I scroll past any of your videos without subs/captions) https…

Assuming the captions are actually good, this is long overdue. https://twitter.com/...

A couple months ago we rolled out video caption file upload. Starting today, all videos will be auto-captioned. To see them, turn on captioning in your mobile device settings, or select the CC button on Web. What do you think of the experience? https://twitter.com/...
