There are lots of ways to critique the iPhone 16e, but I promise you nobody considering one gives even the smallest shit about the Wi-Fi spec Apple put in it. People niggling about Wi-Fi, yet accessibility is (predictably) an afterthought. Sigh.

iPhone 16e review: reliable performance, good camera, the C1 modem “seems fine”, but no MagSafe, no ultrawide camera, and $599 feels $100 too high

The iPhone 16E is everything I love and hate about iOS.  FaceTime at your fingertips.  A reliable camera.  Simplicity.  Familiarity.

What to expect at WWDC 2024: plans to integrate AI into its apps with a new opt-in service called Apple Intelligence, iOS 18, macOS 15, visionOS 2, and more

The company will introduce ‘Apple Intelligence,’ its long-awaited push into modern AI for the iPhone, iPad and Mac.

A closer look at Apple's AI strategy: Project Greymatter, local and cloud LLM data processing, Siri, sealing a chatbot partnership deal with OpenAI, and more

Though Apple's first set of modern AI features won't be as impressive as rival offerings, the company is betting that its massive customer base can give it an edge.

This is a good piece. Speaking personally as a lifelong disabled person and as a journalist, I wish more mainstream tech media, especially at the legacy places like NYT, would stop being so fatalistic about AI + chatbots. Lots of good uses for ChatGPT, et al, for accessibility.

Despite some skeptics claiming that AI is an industry-wide delusion, last week's demos from OpenAI and Google show that the rate of AI progress is not slowing

Some pundits suggest generative AI stopped getting smarter.  The explosive demos from OpenAI and Google that started the week show there's plenty more disruption to come.

With today's release of iOS/iPadOS 17.4, it's an opportune time to re-up my piece from late January on the ramifications that transcripts will have in Apple Podcasts. This is a huge deal, and a show of Apple's might in terms of allocating resources. https://www.forbes.com/...

Out of MG's scope, but it's worth noting too Zuckerberg doesn't mention accessibility. A tech product is only as good as how accessible and inclusive it is to disabled people. Given Apple's history here, that's a big deal in the appeal department.

Zuckerberg makes valid points on the Quest 3 being better overall than the Vision Pro today, but he risks having his own “Ballmer laughs off the iPhone” moment

Weight is something I've written about previously regarding accessibility.  I've still not yet tried Vision Pro, but can say heaviness will be an issue for those with sensory conditions.  The short battery life could be a *benefit* for those who literally can't wear it for very long.

Apple Vision Pro hands-on: eye and hand tracking are very accurate, but typing is frustrating, the killer app is watching movies, can feel heavy after 15+ min

We got hands-on with the device once more before its official launch, with some new features available to test this time.

Unpopular take: I'm not broken up about Apple busting Beeper Mini for iMessage. iMessage is *a* reason to buy an iPhone. Lots of people buy them. 🤷‍♂️ If Apple truly wanted an iMessage client on Android, they would've built one by now.

This is, as usual, thoughtful work by Casey. As a disabled person—and as a journalist—it disheartens (but isn't surprising) me that nobody has covered the big accessibility problems of Threads. When Casey said 1.0 is “bare-bones,” he isn't fucking exaggerating.

Adam Mosseri says spam attacks on Threads “have picked up” so Meta is tightening “things like rate limits” and warns of “unintentionally limiting active people”

It looks like Twitter isn't the only one having to turn to rate limits — or limits on how many posts users can view — as it turns out.

Threads' early growth decisively proved the demand for a new text-based conversation app that could fully supplant Twitter's role in shaping public conversation

Funny thing about this great @harrymccracken story on Apple's new Personal Voice accessibility feature is I know nearly every one of the players Harry talked to in his reporting. Also, “nothing abut us without us” is as much a truism as it is a mantra. https://www.fastcompany.com/ ...

A look at Apple's Personal Voice, an accessibility feature that lets ALS patients digitize their voices through an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, set to release in 2023

Among the many challenges people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) face is its impact on their speech.

I'm seeing a lot of think pieces this week on how cool Apple's new AI-oriented accessibility features are, particularly Personal Voice. As I told someone a couple days ago, it's not hard to imagine Point to Speak being even more useful on, say, a mixed reality headset.

I probably should write about this, but for as breathlessly as reporters are writing about Apple's headset, it would behoove everyone to keep accessibility in mind. A computer on your face is a new beast, both ergonomically and in terms of software. Don't obsess over cost, etc.

A look at Apple's unusual approach to building its MR headset, which took seven years to develop and which will still be an experimental product at launch

Apple's soon-to-be-revealed mixed-reality device will likely cost $3,000, requires a separate battery pack and is still experimental

I should mention, I am fully aware cost is a crucial factor of consumer tech—especially if Apple's headset is as pricey as reports say it is. I'm merely saying, there's a whole non-trivial aspect to the device that no one is considering in their coverage. I am not surprised.
