Instagram is testing paying $10,000+ in bonuses to select creators posting Reels, as part of a bonus program announced in July

Instagram really wants you to post Reels — they'll even pay you up to $10,000 for one, if you're lucky.  —  As TikTok surpasses the 1 billion monthly active users mark … Source: Instagram .

Context & Ripple Effects

Instagram had already used lucrative offers to TikTok creators to seed Reels. The new bonus test formalizes that creator-acquisition approach inside a program rather than relying only on one-off recruitment.

The later coverage shows the limits of bonus-led supply: reported cuts to Reels payouts and higher eligibility thresholds were followed by expansion of Gifts, giving creators a fan-funded monetization route alongside platform payments.

First-order effects

  • Selected Reels creators gain a potentially material, platform-funded incentive to prioritize Instagram video output.
  • Instagram takes on higher near-term creator-acquisition costs in exchange for more Reels inventory and attention within its short-video product.

Second-order effects

  • TikTok faces greater pressure to retain creators whose audience and posting cadence are valuable to competing feeds, while creators gain leverage to compare platform compensation.
  • A bonus program ties creator earnings more closely to Instagram's payout rules and eligibility thresholds, a dependency later highlighted by reported payment reductions.

Third-order effects

  • If this sequence persists, short-video platforms will use large bonuses to attract supply, then shift more monetization toward recurring tools such as Gifts for Reels creators rather than open-ended platform payouts.
  • Creator economics become a form of platform gatekeeper leverage: distribution, eligibility, and monetization terms increasingly sit with the feed operator rather than the creator.

The trend: Short-video platforms are competing for creator supply with upfront incentives while building monetization systems that reduce reliance on discretionary bonus pools.

@YayaHan Oh nooooo wtf?! This makes me extremely afraid for the rigorous reels schedule I'm in the middle of for the same program... 😬 Really love how social media demands these extreme posting adaptations and then either won't give us working tools or pulls the rug out from unde…

Instagram: Hey, you can try Reels bonus play & we pay ya some $$ for replays! Me: Cool! Lemme upload sum reels! *2 weeks & 5 reels later* Instagram: Never mind, that feature is no longer available to you for no reason. None of those reel replays counted. Byeeeeee!

@Cowbuttcrunchie Yup it just went away today, all the tabs and options. Not before showing me how much the $$ estimate was 😂 I suppose posting reels in general is good so... keep going? 😬
