Android apps can now run on Windows 11  —  Microsoft has released the first preview version of its Android apps support in Windows 11.

    The cherry on top: every Windows machine now has two Linux systems. The year of Linux on the desktop is not only here, it came in duplicate.

    Apple's response to this trend was to provide tools to move iOS apps to macOS, and ultimately allow iOS apps to run on modern macs out of the box.

    Chromebooks showed this was not only possible, but could be great and desirable. Rumor is that David Reveman, the wizard behind Compiz/Xgl and Chrome graphics, was one of the forces behind this stunt in the first place.

    And Microsoft is now doing something similar, but with the only stack that was available for this, Android. It is a match made in heaven: Android developers get access to a larger market and Windows gets an app infusion - and fills important gaps in its computing story.

    New native applications on Mac and Windows have been declining for a while: both platforms were late to packaging, security and convenience - a gap that was filled more or less with the web and some Electron.
