Surprise: Facebook is planning to change its company name next week to reflect its focus on the metaverse. I'm told Zuckerberg is planning a formal unveil next Thursday at Connect, the company's annual AR/VR conference https://www.theverge.com/...

the word “metaverse” was coined by neal stephenson in the book “snowcrash” and it originally described a virtual world owned by corporations where end users were treated as citizens in a dystopian corporate dictatorship what if neal was right
  • @inafried Ina Fried on x
Dear Facebook: We've received your request to change your name. However, due to our real names policy, you will first need to fax us a copy of your court order and new driver's license....

facebook's insistence on launching a cryptocurrency + becoming a “metaverse” means one thing zuckerberg had enough of running a company he wants to run a country
  • @samidh @samidh on x
@alexeheath My best guess for the new name: “Meta” But I'd prefer something more classic like simply “A Mark Zuckerberg Production”

No one has made a good joke yet about Facebook's new name but it's still early

Over/under that Facebook name change is the same day as 30+ journalists start publishing stories based on the leaks?
  • @stevekovach Steve Kovach on x
Rumor has it the embargo is for Monday. Facebook reports earnings on Monday, which would be a good time to announce a name change. https://twitter.com/...
  • @joshsternberg Josh Screamberg on x
I'm so old I remember when Facebook's then-CMO, Antonio Lucio, made a huge to-do about turning its brand name into all caps, adding “from Facebook” to its branding for Instagram and Whatsapp. (This was just two years ago.) https://twitter.com/...
  • @sheeraf She-Ra Frenkel on x
I'm old enough to remember when Zuckerberg was so committed to the Facebook name he insisted on “Instagram by FB” and “Whatsapp by FB.” Guess that didn't work so they are trying a new tactic. Weird how much faith companies put in new branding. https://twitter.com/...

Nobody calls Alphabet Alphabet. They call it Google. Seems like a big waste of time/money to try to rebrand as a parent company. https://twitter.com/...

It's already a Zuckerberg project so, not a bad call for the Facebook rebrand and they already have the .com: So... Meta? https://twitter.com/...
  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on x
If you give a broken product a new name, people will quite quickly work out that this new brand has the same problems. A better ‘rebrand’ approach is generally to fix the problem first and then create a new brand reflecting the new experience.

  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on x
Hence, there's an entity called Alphabet that owns Google and also owns Waymo. Waymo isn't really a consumer brand yet, but if it was, would consumers think it was part of ‘Google’? If FB does the same to separate the ‘Metaverse’ project from the old blue app, would that work?

It's what all the popular non-evil companies do! Like when Philip Morris became Altria, or Blackwater rebranded as Xe! https://twitter.com/...

We gotta be careful not to let these sudden major announcements by Facebook - its forthcoming name change, hiring 10,000 EU workers to build the Metaverse - not overshadow whatever new blockbuster reporting is coming down the pipeline that it's trying to distract us from.

Facebook is planning to change its company name, apparently because of the metaverse stuff. But let's face it, there are other reasons it might want to disassociate itself from the Facebook brand. https://www.theverge.com/...

I think @alexheath may be onto something, suggesting that Facebook could rename itself to “Horizon” to emphasize the metaverse. That platform *did* get a rebrand into “Horizon Worlds.” Not as if Facebook ain't a stranger to duplicate brand names. https://uploadvr.com/...
  • @dalmaer Dion Almaer on x
Does rebranding like this (and others) work? I'm skeptical, but have also seen the effects of “Walmart Labs” as a brand, and how it can give enough cognitive dissonance for folks. https://twitter.com/...
  • @r0h1n Rohin Dharmakumar on x
Sounds like a very novel strategy. Nothing at all about about moving beyond increasingly toxic associations with Facebook brand. Zero similarities with tobacco giant Philip Morris rebranding itself to Altria many years ago. https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...
  • @benedictevans Benedict Evans on x
Conversely, if you're going to create an entirely new product line (around VR and gaming, for example) then it could make a lot of sense to create a new holding company with a new brand, so that the new product doesn't get associated with the tarnished brand.

So the idea is that Facebook essentially wants to distance itself from ... well, Facebook. The company will be named Zuckplex let's say and then it has a range of products of which Facebook is just is one. It has the feel of a mobster trying to move assets into legit enterprises.

This lawsuit is about protecting the data of half of all District residents and tens of millions of people across the country. We've taken our obligation to investigate wrongdoing very seriously—and Facebook should take its responsibility to protect users just as seriously.
