Apple debuts third-gen $179 AirPods with an updated design, better sound quality, Spatial Audio in Apple Music, and a MagSafe-enabled case, available next week

Preorders start today and they'll be available October 26th  —  Apple has just introduced its third-generation AirPods … Source: Apple .

Context & Ripple Effects

Apple’s original $159 wireless earbuds established the entry point, while the 2019 refresh added hands-free Siri and a higher-priced wireless-charging option. The third generation moves the standard model further toward Apple’s music and charging ecosystem without adopting the Pro model’s silicone-tip design.

The nearby AirPods Pro launch had already created a $249 tier built around active noise cancellation, Transparency mode, and water resistance. The $179 model therefore fills the space between basic AirPods and Pro rather than replacing either proposition.

First-order effects

  • Apple gives standard-AirPods buyers Spatial Audio support in Apple Music and a MagSafe-enabled case at a $179 price point.
  • Apple Music gains a newly updated hardware touchpoint for its Spatial Audio offering, while AirPods Pro retains its noise-control and ear-tip differentiation.

Second-order effects

  • Apple’s own AirPods lineup becomes more deliberately tiered: standard models compete on sound, design, and ecosystem features, while Pro models justify their premium through active noise cancellation and fit.
  • The $179 price resets the middle of Apple’s earbud range, putting pressure on feature upgrades—not merely wireless connectivity—to distinguish lower-priced alternatives.

Third-order effects

  • The subsequent AirPods 4 split into $129 standard and $179 ANC versions shows Apple continuing to turn once-premium earbud features into explicit price tiers rather than maintaining a single mainstream model.
  • If that progression holds, Apple’s headphone strategy will be defined less by one flagship AirPods product and more by staged migration of audio, charging, and noise-control features across the lineup.

The trend: Apple is segmenting AirPods by progressively moving ecosystem and audio features from premium models into clearly priced mainstream tiers.

@markgurman Counter take: regular AirPods fall out of my ears, pro do not.

So the AirPod 3, is AirPod pro but without the Buds? Thank you, I'll pass. #AppleEvent https://twitter.com/...

@markgurman Janky? It works amazingly well here.

Here's a hot take: the AirPods 3 are a better buy than the AirPods Pro. 1 hour more of battery, 6 hours more of battery life in the case, a more compact case, universal fit, and $60 less than the Pro. Only plus for the Pro is janky noise-cancellation — not enough of a gap.

    3) 3rd Gen entry level AirPods w/ spatial audio. I'm surprised they raised the price to $179, that's a 13% increase. Even with the higher price, they're going to sell as many AirPods this holiday as they can make. Overall AirPods is about 4% of revenue, growing at 15% in 2022.

Getting a lot of disagreement about AirPods Pro noise cancellation being “janky.” Apple literally has a support post on their website about ANC issues and a replacement program that was just extended. https://support.apple.com/... & https://support.apple.com/.... https://twitter.…

@markgurman That is a failure of hardware not Noise Cancelling. Mine don't do that so your comment comes across as very poorly informed which I know you aren't.

Nah I'm good of the 3rd gen AirPods lite. I need active noise cancellation for when the wife start talkin. https://twitter.com/...

@markgurman The AirPods Pro have 95% the NC ability as my AirPods Max. And that's damn impressive

@markgurman Bit of a miss here... noise cancellation is actually amazing
  • @lockheedguy @lockheedguy on x
@markgurman I use noise-cancellation almost every day on my AirPods Pros. It's actually the most useful feature for me personally, so regular AirPods would never be on my radar

Worth noting is the fact that AirPods Pro have been upgraded with a MagSafe wireless charging case, like the new AirPods 3. The older AirPods 2 charging case, on the other hand, lacks wireless charging support — the optional upgrade has been discontinued. #AppleEvent https://twit…
