When Apple introduced MagSafe alongside the iPhone 12 with its magnetic charger-and-wallet announcement in October 2020, the pitch was an accessory ecosystem that snaps on effortlessly. The follow-up reviews set the pattern early: the MagSafe Duo landed at $129 without a power adapter and drew criticism for build quality in the TechCrunch-era Duo review, and the long-gestating battery pack — reported as far back as February by Bloomberg before shipping — arrived integrated with iOS but unable to deliver a full iPhone 12 charge at a premium price, per The Verge's Battery Pack review.

  • iPhone 12 owners who bought into the MagSafe promise are paying premium prices for accessories that solve only part of the problem — the battery pack tops up rather than fully charges, and the Duo needs a separate adapter purchase.
