1/ After 13 years at FB, I've decided to step down as CTO and pass the baton to @boztank at some point in 2022. I will stay on as long as it takes to ensure a successful leadership transition. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

NEW: Facebook's CTO @schrep announced internally he'll step down sometime in 2022. Schrep oversees engineering, infrastructure, AR/VR, artificial intelligence...It's the biggest departure from FB in years Taking his CTO role: @boztank https://www.bloomberg.com/...
  • @samidh @samidh on x
For those who care about platforms operating in societally responsible ways, I can't even begin to tell you how worrisome I find this news about a post-Schrep FB. https://twitter.com/...
  • @carolecadwalla Carole Cadwalladr on x
And enjoy this cameo from the excruciatingly bad BBC access doco. Johnny, who works in PR, explains how very very sad the Cambridge Analytica scandal made all the employees. And @boztank says how it can't be allowed to hold Facebook back.. https://twitter.com/...

Facebook CTO Schroepfer stepping down next year. significant! https://www.bloomberg.com/...
  • @schrep Mike Schroepfer on x
3/ It has been a privilege to lead our technology teams during a time of incredible growth & advancement. I am proud of what the team has achieved, from unleashing the benefits of AI & bringing VR to life to connecting more people around the world through technology.
  • @ryan_browne_ Ryan Browne on x
Wow Mike Schroepfer stepping down as Facebook CTO. He'll be replaced by Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, FB's AR/VR guru. https://www.cnbc.com/...
  • @samidh @samidh on x
Context: After I left FB earlier this month, many existing employees asked me who could now best be their ally on matters of societal import. Who was on my short list every single time? Schrep. So this is indeed significant.

.@schrep I had an absolutely amazing time under your leadership back in the early days of Oculus days and couldn't be more grateful for your support and mentorship. Good luck to you on this next stage as FB's Senior Fellow! https://twitter.com/...

Sobering scenario from @samidh: next CTO of FB might oversee something worse than what we have now. https://twitter.com/...
  • @om @om on x
Here is my PR-bullshit free translation: 1. No way stock is going to do better than what it has done over past 13 years. 2. Govt(s) oversight is going to grind the company. 3. Top down leadership is getting crazier. 4. Term limit on enabling a monster is 13 years. https://twitter…

He also said that “maybe it costs a life by exposing someone to bullies.” Five years after that memo, he will now oversee technology initiatives for a company that seeks to build products for children. https://twitter.com/...

Big turbulent changes at Facebook after a big turbulent week. The CTO is out. @boztank steps up. For reference, this is like handing the keys to your Maserati to your least trusted teenage son. Only the Maserati is a trillion $ global tech company https://www.bloomberg.com/...
  • @om @om on x
The last thing I will say to this - the longer you have stayed inside the circle, the less trustworthy you are. It is a shame that SV is hiring from a knowingly toxic and morally ambiguous place. All things learned there are going to pollute the ecosystem for a long time
  • @sheeraf Sheera Frenkel on x
Facebook announces that one of their longest serving execs, Mike Schroepfer (known as Schrep) is leaving FB. @boztank will be the next CTO. I'll never forget this @CadeMetz story on Schrep, (and I've heard stories of Schrep crying in the office too). https://t.co/BL10hhnnrB
  • @jason_kint Jason Kint on x
In a company under global scrutiny for ethical lapses and a harmful core biz model, you don't place your loyal lieutenant Andrew Bosworth in charge of all tech unless you're preparing for war. Act accordingly. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

The hardware guy becoming the new CTO shows in which direction $FB is headed. I think the long term ambition is to create an ecosystem much like $AAPL. That's why those companies are fighting each other so hard.

Schrep out; Boz in. Seems like you need to have a cool nickname to be CTO of Facebook. https://twitter.com/...

“After thirteen years helping to make many aspects of life actively worse, I'm stepping down from my role at Facebook. I made enough money to buy Guam while I was there, but now that I've left I will pen thought pieces about how Facebook is Bad Actually. In this essay I will...” …

Facebook CTO Mike “Shrep” Schroepfer is leaving the embattled social network after 13 years. Andrew @Boz Bosworth to replace him. @KurtWagner8 doesn't have a cool nickname but does have the scoop on the @TheTerminal and https://www.bloomberg.com/...
  • @mikeisaac Rat King on x
just as significant as Schrep leaving is Zuckerberg's decision to replace him with Andrew Bozworth, another Facebook lifer. Bosworth most recently launched the Ray-Ban Stories (FB glasses) — and more specifically, could be seen wearing them during a pillow fight with his boss

This is @boztank's most famous moment, though there have been many. Maybe people will die, he acknowledges, because of Facebook. ‘But anything that allows us to connect more people more often is *de facto* good’ https://www.buzzfeednews.com/ ...
  • @rmac18 @rmac18 on x

Boz becoming FB's next CTO is clearly a sign of what they're focusing on: Pushing into hardware as the core social media site is on fire https://about.fb.com/...

2/ My new role as Senior Fellow will enable me to stay deeply connected to the company, working on key initiatives including recruiting and developing technical talent and fostering our AI investments in critical technologies like @PyTorch

I remember a time when Mike was part of @mozilla and what a strange journey from being part of open web's champion to being part of the evil “attention sucking” empire that is net negative for the web, SV ecosystem & Society.

Congrats to @boztank as new Facebook CTO. XR is a huge part of their future. “Boz will continue leading Facebook Reality Labs and overseeing our work in augmented reality, virtual reality and more, and as part of this transition a few other groups will join Boz's team as well.” h…

The first time I read Boz's now-infamous memo The Ugly, I was several months into my job at Facebook. I thought it was obvious satire a la A Modest Proposal. When it was leaked, I was perplexed. Was this Poe's Law in action? It was only then that I learned that Boz was serious. h…

On so many hard questions over the 2 years I've worked at FB, I've seen @Schrep be super-thoughtful and principled in trying to make the right calls, thinking not just of our company or our users but of society writ large. I will miss him immensely, as a leader and an ally. https…

Facebook's hardware group was already its second-largest org at over 10K employees, and now its leader Boz is taking over the the largest org (engineering) as well. Big promotion that also shows how important AR/VR is to Facebook's future. (Boz and Zuck are also very tight)
  • @shakeelhashim Shakeel on x
Facebook is still mad that it never owned the OS in the smartphone era, leaving it vulnerable to things like Apple's IDFA changes. It's determined to not let that happen with the next platform. https://twitter.com/...

Other Facebook issues on his watch: - World's largest repository of child sex abuse media - Use by Myanmar junta to commit genocide - Distribution of propaganda aimed at killing and maiming people by spreading COVID Also some bad stuff
