What to expect from Apple's September 14 event: narrower iPhone 13 notch, LTPO displays on Pro models, redesigned Watch Series 7, no M1X MacBook Pros, and more

Context & Ripple Effects

The reported lineup separates the iPhone 13 Pro models through LTPO displays while pairing a redesigned Watch Series 7 with the standard iPhone refresh. Apple’s expected omission of M1X MacBook Pros also keeps the event focused on phones and wearables rather than a broader hardware slate.

Related coverage shows that Apple’s subsequent September-event expectations continued to center on differentiated iPhone tiers, from a revamped Pro-model notch to USB-C across the iPhone 15 lineup. That makes the 2021 Pro-display split an early marker of a recurring event structure.

First-order effects

  • Apple is expected to give iPhone 13 Pro buyers a display feature not listed for the standard models, sharpening the practical distinction between its iPhone tiers.
  • A redesigned Watch Series 7 expands the event’s wearable update, while MacBook Pro buyers are left without the anticipated M1X announcement at this event.

Second-order effects

  • Apple’s September messaging must sell the event around iPhone and Watch upgrades rather than a simultaneous Mac refresh, concentrating attention on the Pro iPhone tier and Watch Series 7.
  • The later event coverage’s focus on Pro-specific iPhone changes suggests Apple can sustain annual upgrade narratives by assigning visible changes to selected models rather than refreshing every product category at once.

Third-order effects

  • If this release pattern persists, Apple’s September events become a recurring mechanism for tiering hardware upgrades: premium iPhones receive differentiated interfaces or components while adjacent product lines rotate into later launch windows.

The trend: Apple is organizing recurring hardware events around selective, tier-specific upgrades rather than uniform refreshes across its device portfolio.

There will be two events, and I'd expect the latter to be Mac + iPad. iPhone/Watch Tuesday. https://twitter.com/...

It's easy to mock Facebook's new smart glasses, but they're the first on-face wearable I've seen that doesn't obviously look like you're wearing a really weird pair of glasses for the sole purpose of wearing glasses that have a camera in them. So that could be meaningful. https:/…

If the iPhone 13's smaller notch allows battery percentage to be shown... i'll buy one in a heartbeat

(assuming what I'm told is right, Apple is really trying to come full circle with the serialization of parts once again)

So without looking closely, I just assumed the two cameras of Ray-Ban Stories was for capturing stereoscopic footage that would easily playback in an Oculus Quest. Instead: “twin cameras allow users to add 3D effects to their photos and videos once they upload them to the app.”🤦‍…

Yeah, Apple Watch Series 7 and iPhone 13 are cool, but I'm still waiting for those 14/16 MacBook Pros. 😍

While we are expecting to see A15 on Tuesday, don't expect M1X to use A15 cores like how M1 uses A14 cores. I foresee the Mac cores being more of an every 2-3 year update

@rsgnl @markgurman LiDAR only on pro's. The CADs show it clearly
  • @rsgnl Joe Rossignol on x
Hey @markgurman is analyst Dan Ives accurate about the LiDAR Scanner expanding to all iPhone 13 models? I was under the impression LiDAR will be remaining limited to the Pro models this year. https://twitter.com/...

Wait until you guys see some of the new anti repair stuff that Apple is pulling with the iPhone 13 🥲

This is like when the iPhone came out and people mocked it for not having 3G AR needs cameras to work effectively, my money would be this is just the first gen to get people used to cameras on their faces https://twitter.com/...

Storage is so cheap these days & getting cheaper, can you imagine at one point in the history of computing 1TB would have cost you millions? Literally... millions & don't get me started on the physical space needed at that time... definitely not fitting into a phone https://twitt…

I remember having the iPhone 4 with 8GB of storage. We've come a long way. https://twitter.com/...
  • @happicamp James Bareham on x
I have a 250GB of storage on my iPhone. After two years I still have 168GB free. Unless you're using your phone as a video camera I can't possibly imagine why anyone needs 1TB https://twitter.com/...
  • @zollotech Aaron Zollo on x
iPhone 13 is said to now offer up to 1TB as an option. Maybe for Pro-Res video? How much storage is enough for you? I can get by with 128GB easily most of the time.

Imagine how much the 1TB iPhone 13 Pro Max will cost in Europe https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...
  • @tme_michael Michael Burkhardt on x
Big if true If they keep the same prices ($699 for mini and $799 for regular), but throw in 128gb, I'd be pretty happy with that tbh https://twitter.com/...
