Spotify says all US-based podcasters using Anchor can sell subscriptions to episodes available on RSS and Spotify, expanding internationally later

Plus new price tiers and email addresses  —  Spotify is broadening the number of people who can offer subscription podcasts and have their shows play on its service. Source: Spotify .

Context & Ripple Effects

Spotify is turning Anchor from a podcast-creation service into a monetization channel: the initial US rollout is designed to reach listeners both inside Spotify and through RSS. It was soon followed by a [[a:1158792|global subscription expansion with 20 price points and creator access to subscriber contacts]].

The related coverage shows Spotify adding adjacent creator tools rather than treating subscriptions as a stand-alone feature, including Audience Network ad-marketplace access for US Anchor creators and later video-podcast uploads across five English-speaking markets.

First-order effects

  • US-based Anchor creators can begin selling paid episodes with distribution on Spotify and RSS, while Spotify adds price-tier and email-address support to their subscription operations.
  • Spotify gains a direct reason for subscription-focused podcasters to create and manage shows through Anchor rather than using creation tools without Spotify’s payment flow.

Second-order effects

  • RSS availability lets creators sell subscriptions without making paid listening exclusive to Spotify, reducing the distribution trade-off for creators building audiences across podcast apps.
  • Spotify can attach additional revenue tools to the same Anchor creator base; the subsequent Audience Network rollout links subscription creators to programmatic advertising as another monetization path.

Third-order effects

  • If Spotify continues bundling subscriptions, advertising, video, and creation tools, podcasting shifts toward integrated creator platforms that control production workflows and multiple revenue streams rather than standalone hosting.
  • Creator access to subscriber contact information makes audience ownership a competitive feature alongside platform reach, limiting how fully a distribution service can lock creators into its own listening app.

The trend: Podcast platforms are competing to become full creator operating systems, combining open distribution with payments, advertising, and production tools.

again, as of right now, if you want your paid podcast content to be listenable on spotify, you'll have to host on anchor. if you want to offer apple podcast subs, you'll have to host those episodes on apple. the future!

spotify is letting more anchor-based podcasters offer paid podcast subs. few things: -still no in-app button -still no private rss feed support within spotify -but now, podcasters will receive their subscribers' emails (so long as the listeners opt in) https://www.theverge.com/..…
