Apple says the Bluetooth AAC codec used by AirPods Pro and AirPods Max does not support Apple Music's lossless streaming, nor does Lightning on AirPods Max

Apple today announced that starting in June, Apple Music songs will be available to stream in Lossless and Hi-Resolution Lossless formats …

AirPods Max also won't support lossless over the lightning cable, the company tells me. No Sonos support for lossless streaming just yet either.

Rather than gripe yet again about hi-res audio having almost no value... If you watch 8:40-17:19 of this video, I _guarantee you_ you will never care about lossless or 24-bit audio ever again (for playback): https://www.youtube.com/...

It is funny to see all the gnashing of teeth. No one will listen to lossless after they hear Spatial Audio. It won't even be close. https://twitter.com/...
  • @reckless Nilay Patel on x
Btw I truly, sincerely love that Apple pushed a music quality update that hardly any of its hardware supports. Create the marketplace you want to see in the world, Apple Music team! https://twitter.com/...

Will Apple fix this with an update or opt for more AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Max 2 sales? You decide. https://twitter.com/...

So new AirPods coming soon is what you're saying? Got it. https://twitter.com/...
  • @stammy Paul Stamatiou on x
i love Apple but sometimes they just make me scratch my head.. if you spent $549 just a few months ago on Apple's top tier AirPods Max headphones.. you can't use them with the just-announced Apple Music Lossless (the regular non-hi-res lossless; over wireless or via cable) 🤦‍♂️ h…

So my $1,650 in Max-sized Apple products don't support Apple Music lossless. Nice. https://twitter.com/...
  • @tldtoday @tldtoday on x
Every tech article rn ☠️ Title = doomsday, article = good news Basically you can't do lossless wireless or wired on airpods max but you get MUCH higher quality than we get currently (for $0 extra lol) https://twitter.com/...

Yeah I mean how else are they going to sell the AirPods Max Pro. OBVIOUSLY. 🎧 https://twitter.com/...

@SnazzyQ I just mean the easy headline that Apple's new $500 headphones don't support Apple's new hifi audio feature is hilarious

Between this and the new Apple TV remote not having the U1 chip for location, it feels as though internal communication has broken down: that different teams who could benefit from talking just don't. https://twitter.com/...

I'd be curious to see if Apple can update the current AirPods with lossless support through a firmware update and some funky off-spec Bluetooth radio work. It feels like the AirPods Max at least could be offered USB audio through a Lightning cable, truly lossless
  • @vladsavov Vlad Savov on x
The painfully ironic thing about Apple, the maniacal cord cutter with a mediocre Bluetooth audio codec, is that its newly announced lossless music streaming quality doesn't work with any of its wireless headphones. https://www.apple.com/...
  • @peterpham Peter Pham on x
i'm sure there will be a dongle you can buy for $99 right? https://twitter.com/...
  • @searls Justin Searls on x
I don't care at all about Apple's lossless format or that it doesn't work on AirPods Max. But I've listened to a *lot* of spatial audio content with them and it blows my mind and completely tricks my lizard brain every time. I've been hoping for this https://www.apple.com/...
  • @dcseifert Dan Seifert on x
gotta wait for the AirPods Pro Max for that https://twitter.com/...
  • @bdsams Brad Sams on x
The AirPods Max wont support the fancy new lossless audio over BT or Lightning You dont become a trillion dollar company by selling a pair of $500 headphones to the same person only once. https://twitter.com/...
  • @pt Parker on x
People don't realize how bad Bluetooth audio is. Hi-fi digital audio is the gold-plated speaker cables of the Apple audio ecosystem. This ain't the bottleneck. https://twitter.com/...
  • @lukezim @lukezim on x
Audio quality so good your $500 headphones can't hang. Here for it https://twitter.com/...
  • @thomasfuchs @thomasfuchs on x
Literally nothing supports this, because Bluetooth doesn't. You need a USB audio device that can handle this. If only there was still a headphone jack... https://twitter.com/...
  • @tldtoday @tldtoday on x
Everyone jumping the gun on airpods max not supporting lossless over Bluetooth when high end options like LDAC don't either. The important thing here is we could potentially get a bump over wireless (512KB-1024) which would be HUGE.
  • @snazzyq Quinn Nelson on x
@MKBHD Oh yeah, that's definitely funny. Just sad that 99% of people will read it and assume Apple is being jerks or didn't properly plan in advance—which is not true.
  • @chriswelch Chris Welch on x
....I'm not understanding why the AirPods Max can't play lossless audio when plugged in. Hi-res is one thing, but not even regular lossless? WTF. https://twitter.com/...
  • @snazzyq Quinn Nelson on x
This is not surprising unless you don't understand codecs AirPods Max were designed to use. Doesn't really matter, tbh. AAC is an excellent file format and AirPods Max will continue to sound great—better with Spatial Audio (if you're into that). https://twitter.com/...
  • @quinnypig Corey Quinn on x
So nothing Apple sells supports the format, and they killed the headphone jack making it really hard to bring your own. Courage! https://twitter.com/...
  • @hussaintausif Tausif Hussain on x
I think that should read, all Bluetooth headphones won't support lossless lol. https://twitter.com/...
  • @kenbolido Ken Bolido on x
I already kinda figured this would be the case with the Max since Apple would have to pull magic tricks to get lossless on it to work. Now the thing I'm curious to test is Apple Music lossless on Android with LDAC and AptX HD https://twitter.com/...
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
Makes sense technologically (Bluetooth) but big disappointment given the big price. https://twitter.com/...
  • @hackyouriphone @hackyouriphone on x
Imagine spending $ 549 on AirPods Max and not being able to listen to music in high quality on Apple Music 😩 https://twitter.com/...
