The Oversight Board says it will announce its decision on Facebook's banning of Trump at 9AM ET on Wednesday, after receiving 9,000+ public responses

this would be a HUGE MISTAKE. Hugh Hewitt / @hughhewitt : The decision by @Facebook independent board on former President Trump is far less important than the debate underway on how to structure government oversight/regulation of #BigTech. Senator @HawleyMO new book “The Tyranny of Big Tech” is thus far more important to debate. @meidastouch : If Facebook allows Trump back on their platform they will have (even more) blood on their hands. https://twitter.com/... William LeGate / @williamlegate : If you let him back on, it'll directly result in violence. He literally incited an insurrection against the United States Government which nearly resulted in the assassination of the VP & the entirety of Congress just months ago... https://twitter.com/... Parker Molloy / @parkermolloy : I would absolutely love to be wrong, but I can't imagine Facebook actually keeping its ban on him. They're going to let him back on, Zuckerberg is going to go, “it's out of my hands! the Oversight Board made the call!” and the platform will become more of a cesspool than ever. Mystery Solvent / @mysterysolvent : If Facebook allows Trump to use his account again they are just as responsible as Trump for whatever damage, death, fraud, or violence he causes. Will Chamberlain / @willchamberlain : Here's the thing No American elected this Oversight Board No American voted for anyone who appointed the Oversight Board Having a third party arbiter to appeal to us better than nothing, but we need real access to the courts when Big Tech decides to censor https://twitter.com/... @blackamazon : From all their events they have ONE black person speaking, no Asian people , no non English speakers ? No moderators And nobody even BLINKED at the line up https://twitter.com/... Marietje Schaake / @marietjeschaake : Don't let Facebook's Oversight Board distract from the need to ensure equally applied accountability for hate speech, lies about elections, disinformation and other harmful content by a truly independent oversight process! ↘️ https://twitter.com/... Rashad Robinson / @rashadrobinson : Reminder that an oversight board that Facebook set up as a clear attempt to appear transparent without giving up fundamental control should not be making decisions that concern the safety of our democracy. https://www.cnn.com/... Robert J. DeNault / @robertjdenault : Can we not normalize the Facebook oversight board being treated like a court of law? Just make the announcement or don't. We don't need this. https://twitter.com/... Kara Swisher / @karaswisher : The Facebook Oversight Board will decide on the online fate of Donald Trump on Wednesday, though @profgalloway & I think this was Facebook's responsibility. We also think they're going to let the toxic rule violator back on, because forgiving sedition is a thing now. Your vote? Eric Garland / @ericgarland : You became Missouri's Attorney General with $300,000 from Peter Thiel, one of Facebook's earliest investors, you counterfeit puppet. https://twitter.com/... Ashley Wood Schelling / @awschelling : If you have to have a proactive crisis comms PR campaign every time you make a decision about something...maybe you're making the wrong decisions? https://twitter.com/... Angry Staffer / @angry_staffer : Wednesday morning we find out if the Facebook Oversight Board has the courage to do what's right, or if they'll bow to political pressure and unban Trump. Anyone else who posted half the incendiary shit he did would be permanently banned. https://www.cnn.com/... Kara Swisher / @karaswisher : Tomorrow on Pivot, both @profgalloway and I predict that the Facebook Oversight Board will let Trump back on the platform and Facebook will comply. Why do we know? Because: The past is prologue. https://twitter.com/... Josh Hawley / @hawleymo : Free speech in America now depends on the whims of the most powerful monopoly in social media. This is bad https://twitter.com/... @slpng_giants : In other news, the Exxon Oversight Board, paid by Exxon, will announce its decision whether or not Exxon should take responsibility for the Valdez oil spill. https://twitter.com/... Charles Johnson / @green_footballs : The only thing that would surprise me is if they DON'T allow him to come back and spread more hatred and sedition. https://twitter.com/... @nytimes : Will Donald Trump be allowed back on Facebook? The platform's Oversight Board will announce a decision on Wednesday. It will be closely watched as a template for how social networks handle political speech and misinformation by political leaders. https://www.nytimes.com/... Heidi N. Moore / @moorehn : There is a 100% chance that Facebook will make a bad decision, because Facebook doesn't make any other kind, but let's push back against this being a “template.” It will be one decision by a badly run company and this decision is a sign to stop empowering that platform altogether https://twitter.com/... Evelyn Douek / @evelyndouek : If you ask me, the mass media interest in the fate of Trump's facebook account provides good evidence for the idea that a big driver of its oxygen was, you know, that same media @rmac18 : It's gonna be funny when so many institutions and and legal scholars spend hours paying lip service to this decision and Trump's first post back will be something like “Biden did 9/11” https://twitter.com/... @slpng_giants : These organizations are helping legitimize an illegitimate entity that is strictly there to be a meat shield for @facebook's revenue and terrible decision-making. Clown show. https://twitter.com/... Oversight Board / @oversightboard : Ahead of our announcement on the Trump suspension case, a reminder of how the Oversight Board makes decisions: https://twitter.com/...

If @Facebook reinstates Trump on Wednesday, it'll be the dumbest thing that Zuckerberg's ever done. To reward a serial lying fascist who attempted to overturn a domocratic election, and overthrow the US govmnt; who continues to spread the BIG LIE — this would be a HUGE MISTAKE.

No matter what happens, remember that the Oversight Board is not a legal entity, its rulings are not binding and, while very smart people comprise it, they are all being paid six figures to protect the awful decisions of a terrible company that should have independent oversight. …

Time and time again, Donald Trump abused platform rules. Time and time again, Donald Trump incited violence and spread hate. If he's allowed back on @Facebook, why would it be different this time @OversightBoard, this isn't a hard decision. https://www.cnn.com/...

One thing that was fascinating to research for our book was the way in which Trump tested (and strained) all of Facebook's rules, and the dozens (hundreds?) of debates and meetings the company held internally to try and contend with the way he used Facebook's platform. https://tw…
  • @sheeraf Sheera Frenkel on x
I'd wager that at this point, Zuckerberg is hoping that the Oversight board recommends a permanent ban on Trump. It takes the decision out of his hands, and means the company doesn't have to contend with the ongoing misinformation news cycle that Trump created.

Trump being allowed back on Facebook will have a big impact on the GOP. Most importantly he could get access to a very powerful fundraising tool. We saw how effective the Trump machine used Facebook for $$$ in the past. https://twitter.com/...

Big Tech is wielding a quasi-sovereign power when it censors people If it wasn't obvious before, the fact that a Facebook tribunal is “issuing a ruling” on “Trump's case” is a tell https://a.msn.com/...
