Twitter announces Super Follow feature to let users charge for tweets, and a Communities feature to let users create and join groups based on specific interests

It's also planning a groups feature  —  Twitter announced a pair of big upcoming features today: the ability for users to charge …

The Verge Jacob Kastrenakes

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter’s announcement follows reports that it was building subscription products to reduce its reliance on advertising. Super Follows turns that strategy into a creator-facing product, while Communities adds interest-based spaces in which creators can gather audiences.

The plan later moved from announcement to a limited iOS Super Follows launch with set monthly price points, indicating that access and pricing would be controlled by Twitter rather than left entirely to creators.

First-order effects

  • Creators gain a new way to charge followers for tweets, while Twitter gains a subscription-based revenue stream alongside advertising.
  • Twitter users gain interest-based Communities, giving the platform a dedicated grouping mechanism beyond the main public timeline.

Second-order effects

  • Creators must weigh paid posting against the reach of public tweets, while followers face a choice between free access and recurring payments for exclusive material.
  • Twitter’s set-price, limited-user rollout gives the company direct control over creator monetization terms and lets it test demand before broad availability.

Third-order effects

  • If Super Follows expands, Twitter’s economics shift toward a platform model in which individual accounts are monetizable businesses, matching the wider push for tools that let people create economic value on social networks.
  • Combining paid creator access with interest-based groups would make audience ownership and community participation more central to Twitter’s product structure than the undifferentiated public feed.

The trend: Social platforms are adding direct creator-payment and community tools to diversify beyond advertising and make niche audiences economically valuable.

everyone is dunking on the super follow thing but imo it's very good because twitter is work and people should be paid for their work!! i don't think it'll be very widespread or successful cuz we are ofc paying for *tweets* but i think it could make a difference for some people
  • @jayrosen_nyu Jay Rosen on x
Twitter announced today a new payment tool called “Super Follows,” which would allow Twitter users to charge for premium content, like a newsletter subscription, badges showing support, or bonus tweets. https://www.axios.com/... Hmmm. I would have to consider making use of that.

Whether reporters are allowed to enable Super Follows, and how they can use them, feels like it could cause a lot of controversy within newsrooms when it arrives. Could also raise conflict of interest concerns with reporters who, uh, cover Twitter 😬

Interesting questions with superfollows (and Substack) is how monetization changes platform responsibility. Traditionally, recommendations and ranking have been seen as reasons why platforms have more responsibility for content. Taking 10% for handling payments will be another. h…

The mythical Twitter subscription is almost reality. I'm surprised it took this long, honestly—Twitter has waited on the sidelines for 4+ years. It seems if not for the success of Substack, OnlyFans, and even Medium Membership & YouTube Premium, Twitter might've shelved this too.…

This is somewhat inside baseball but important: Twitter just said that 85% of its ad revenue comes from brand ads. Only 15% comes from direct response ads, which are very valuable because they lead to actual sales. Big missed opportunity/room for improvement there for their biz
