What we want from Facebook and other platforms is not less politics but less of a distortionary effect on politics caused by an algorithmic bias toward outrage

Social networks would love to show users less political content.  Here's why that's a problem.

Facebook is blaming technical issues for its broken promise to Senator Markey and Congress that it would stop recommending political groups to its users before the November election. @alfredwkng and @leonyin report. https://themarkup.org/...

Good stuff @WillOremus. Not enough has been said about this pronouncement from Zuckerberg. Incredible, unchecked power he wields.... to diminish political discussion or fuel its conflagration into violence. Both extremely concerning. https://twitter.com/...

Oct. 28: Zuckerberg told Markey that Facebook would temporarily stop recommending political groups. Jan. 27: Zuckerberg said they would stop doing it permanently. Facebook was recommending political groups that whole time: https://themarkup.org/... https://twitter.com/...

New from me and @LeonYin: In Facebook's response to Sen. Markey, the company said it continued to recommend political groups from October to late January because of “technical issues” https://themarkup.org/...

New from me and @alfredwng for @TheMarkup: Facebook said it continued to recommend political groups due to “technical issues”. Please stand by. https://themarkup.org/...

Activists told us FB's decision to algorithmically remove “politics” from the site would be an uphill battle. @evan_greer from @fightfortheftr said this would likely, “undermine activist social movements and disproportionately silence marginalized people”. https://themarkup.org/.…

In Aug, FB's internal researchers urged leadership to stop rec'ing a group that contained “death threats against Black Lives Matter activists and members of Congress”. This group continued to be rec'd and grew by 27K members between Dec 1 and Jan 19. https://themarkup.org/...

What he said: “The attempt to algorithmically remove politics from platforms seems, to put it bluntly, doomed to fail.” https://themarkup.org/...

Technical issues like “wanting more advertising money.” It's very complex you wouldn't understand. https://twitter.com/...

an oopsies meant Facebook kept algorithmically recommending misinfo-filled political groups for MONTHS after FB promised to stop contrast that with @krishnagade 's thread about on-call engineers paging ML experts to retrain models if Likes declined https://twitter.com/... https:/…
