Podcasters on Apple's platform gain a new revenue option but face a choice between walled-garden subscriptions and the open feed model their audiences expect.
Spotify's surveyed $3–$8 tier structure stops being hypothetical — it becomes the benchmark Apple's pricing has to beat or match.
Second-order effects
Spotify's reported counter — letting podcasters keep 100% of listener payments — turns the take-rate itself into the competitive weapon, pressuring Apple to justify any cut through reach and app placement.
Hosting platforms and podcast tools that serve independent creators get pulled into supporting dual distribution paths, one per ecosystem, raising integration costs across the supply side.
Third-order effects
If both platforms scale paid tiers, podcasting structurally splits between free open-RSS content and platform-exclusive premium shows, with Apple and Spotify controlling discovery and payment rails rather than advertisers.
The pattern extends Apple's services playbook — subscriptions layered onto games, news, and now audio — reinforcing a business where recurring services revenue, not device sales alone, anchors the P&L.
The trend: Audio distribution is shifting from open, ad-supported feeds to platform-controlled subscription bundles, with Apple and Spotify competing on who takes the smaller cut of creator earnings.
Apple practically invented podcasts. Got a massive hit in their pre-installed app. Had no competition for years. Did nothing. Spotify came along and offered podcasts at no extra cost. Apple responds with a paid service separate from music?!?
Apple is mulling a paid podcasting service, @cityofthetown and @jtoonkel report in a good scoop over @theinformation - https://www.theinformation.com/ ...
Alternatively Apple's moves validates Spotify's more aggressive and well ahead podcasting decisions Just as its TV Originals validated Prime Video (at which point iTunes had lost half of its buy/rental market share + Fire TV had surged to first place in connect devices globally)
Strikes me that Apple launching a paid podcasting business is net good for Spotify? At min, makes Spotify, which has exclusive podcasts at no extra charge, a better deal. At maximum, it allows Spotify to increase its pricing (without revenue share to labels) + still be cheaper
Apple is working on a Podcasts subscription service focused on originals, adding to its growing list of services. @Lucas_Shaw: https://www.bloomberg.com/...
gentle reminder that podcasting is historically built on an open ecosystem and this move to further isolate content doesn't serve most creators https://twitter.com/...
So tired of Tim Cook turning every area of his business into a subscription service. Milking customers everywhere they turn isn't a revolutionary idea. It's pathetic this dude took apple from an innovate giant to a subscription monthly business https://twitter.com/...
The Apple line for several years has been: *Podcasting can't be a meaningful business for us and *We don't want to be in the podcast advertising business, bc, yuk. Subscription biz kinda solves second problem, but hard to see how it solves first. https://twitter.com/...
Last week, Twitter banning Trump caused Libertarians to call for private enterprise to be regulated. This week, Apple putting podcasts behind paywalls will cause podcast OGs (most of whom are also Apple fans) to say now this is a good thing. Same energy. https://twitter.com/...
Apple Plans Podcasting Subscription Service in Threat to Spotify https://www.theinformation.com/ ... via @theinformation why not a newsletter subscription service too?
