Google is testing an expansion of its “Short Videos” feature at the top of mobile search that will surface TikTok and Instagram videos in a dedicated carousel
Google had already been testing short-form video in its Discover surface and added a separate Stories carousel for publisher content. Moving third-party clips into the top of mobile search extends that format from a feed-like environment into an intent-driven results page.
TikTok and Instagram gain a dedicated potential distribution slot in Google mobile search, while Google changes the top-of-results presentation for queries that trigger the carousel.
Google's search product now has to present and organize third-party short videos as a distinct result type rather than treating video as a single undifferentiated category.
Second-order effects
The carousel gives Google, ByteDance, and Facebook a concrete product context for discussions over how TikTok and Instagram videos are indexed and ranked.
Google's own Stories format faces a more direct comparison with external social-video clips inside the same broader mobile content-discovery portfolio.
Third-order effects
If Google expands this model, mobile search can increasingly act as an access layer for social-video platforms, with ranking and placement shaping which platform captures the resulting traffic.
The later TikTok test of an in-app Google search option points toward more reciprocal search integrations between discovery platforms rather than fully separate search destinations.
The trend: Short-form video discovery is moving across platform boundaries, with search interfaces becoming distribution routes for social-video catalogs.

Now that Google is indexing stories from @Instagram and @tiktok_us, can we agree that this is how a digital monopoly expands its empire? i.e. By ingesting and building an auction on top of new media formats? https://techcrunch.com/... #StoriesEverywhere https://twitter.com/...

Having seen what this did to news, I'm of two minds. Google is getting a free ride from others' work, and people may not expect these things to be indexed. But this was also the initial promise of Google and of the open web. Closed ecosystems mostly just benefit corporations. htt…

Google was testing the “Short Videos” carousel with YouTube Shorts previously and now you can see both TikTok and Instagram videos there. And Google Discover also has a “Short videos” carousel. Hey, short videos are booming, so I'm sure we will see more of this. https://twitter.c…

Probably not enough to get that antitrust lawsuit dismissed, Google, but I suppose it's a start: “That carousel seemed to first only show YouTube videos, but now it is showing videos from TikTok and Instagram.” #GoogleSearch #Instagram #TikTok #nicetry https://www.seroundtable.co…
