Google is testing TikTok style videos in Discover, the section found to the left of most Android home screens and in the Google iOS app, fed by Trell and Tangi

Context & Ripple Effects

Google's Discover test puts a TikTok-style vertical video feed one swipe from the Android home screen, supplied by its own experiments Trell and Tangi rather than licensed content. It lands amid a wider scramble: YouTube had just begun testing 15-second multi-segment recording, and months later Google extended the same format to mobile search itself with a Short Videos carousel that surfaces TikTok and Instagram clips.

The interesting arc is bidirectional — while Google pulls short video into its surfaces, TikTok pushes toward search, testing a Learn tab for how-to content and later an in-app option to run the same query on Google. Discover is where Google defends its highest-traffic real estate against the For You feed.

First-order effects

  • Google gets a new engagement surface it fully controls — Android home screens and the Google iOS app now carry an algorithmic video feed fed by Trell and Tangi, no TikTok install required.
  • Trell and Tangi, Google's internal short-video efforts, shift from standalone apps to supply layers for existing Google properties with far larger reach.

Second-order effects

  • Competing surfaces respond in kind: Twitter tested converting its Explore page into a For You-style feed, part of the same wave of copycat experiments at Netflix, Spotify, and Reddit noted in related coverage.
  • Because Google's later search carousel surfaces TikTok and Instagram videos directly, TikTok gains a Google-distributed discovery channel even as Google competes with it for watch time — blurring who is feeding whom.

Third-order effects

  • If every default surface — home screens, search results, Explore tabs — becomes a short-video feed, distribution power shifts to whoever owns the recommendation layer, which is why Google is building the format in-house via Trell and Tangi before licensing rivals' content.
  • The end state visible in the coverage is interoperable discovery: Google search inside TikTok, TikTok videos inside Google search — short video becoming infrastructure both companies route through rather than a walled category.

The trend: Discovery surfaces across consumer apps are converging on the TikTok-style algorithmic short-video feed, with Google retrofitting the format into Android and search rather than ceding the entry point.
