Google says News Showcase will soon add free access to select paywalled articles, and it has doubled publisher partners to ~400 since its launch in October
A month after launching News Showcase in October, Google is doubling down on two fronts: the partner roster has grown to roughly 400 publishers, and panels will soon unlock selected paywalled articles for free. The free-access move answers the core publisher objection that surfaced in later coverage — outlets found the early offers underwhelming and doubted the product's efficacy, which pushed the US launch back repeatedly (delayed past Q1 2022).
The timing also tracks regulatory pressure: Google began paying local and regional publishers in Australia amid the fight over proposed media bargaining rules (the Australian rollout), and by 2022 was extending the same free-paywalled-content model in France across 65+ publishers (the French launch). What started as a voluntary licensing program is being shaped as much by regulators and skeptical publishers as by user demand.
First-order effects
Participating publishers get a new lever on their paywalls — Google-funded free access to select articles — while Google secures exclusive inventory for News Showcase panels as its partner base doubles to ~400.
Second-order effects
Free access cuts both ways for publishers: it can drive discovery, but giving away paywalled work risks cannibalizing the subscription funnel those paywalls exist to protect — one reason US outlets balked at terms even after Google signed Bloomberg Media and The Texas Tribune (those US deals).
Third-order effects
If the pattern holds, platform-news economics shift from sending traffic to licensing content outright — a model regulators in Australia and France have already accelerated, and one that makes direct payments, not referrals, the baseline expectation for news distribution.
The trend: News distribution is moving from traffic referral to direct platform licensing, with regulatory pressure determining where Google pays first and how generous the terms become.
