Code in Google Photos app suggests Google will add new editing features and filters for Google One subscribers

The primary reason that you may decide to have a Google One subscription is to get extra storage for Google Drive and other apps, but the service has other benefits.

Context & Ripple Effects

This APK teardown is the first signal of a strategy Google made explicit months later, when it moved Pixel-exclusive editing tools into Google Photos but locked them behind Google One — turning the subscription from a storage add-on into an editing-features paywall.

The longer arc runs the other way too: by 2024 Google was planning to give Magic Editor and other AI editing tools to all Google Photos users for free, unwinding exactly the gating this code foreshadows — which makes this teardown the starting point for a feature lifecycle worth watching.

First-order effects

  • Google One subscribers gain editing features and filters inside Google Photos that free users do not get, giving the subscription a visible, everyday perk beyond extra Drive storage.
  • Google Photos becomes a storefront for Google One: the app's own UI starts advertising what paying unlocks.

Second-order effects

  • Google One's value proposition shifts from capacity to capabilities, a bundling path Google continued by giving Pixel 7 buyers free access to its VPN while keeping other One features paid.
  • Editing quality becomes a differentiator between free and paid tiers of the same app, pressuring Google to keep shipping new subscriber-exclusive tools as older ones age.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, premium photo features follow a migration curve — introduced behind Google One, then democratized to all Photos users once superseded, as happened with Magic Editor — forcing the paid tier to climb up-stack toward newer AI capabilities to justify its price.
  • Consumer cloud subscriptions increasingly compete on bundled software perks rather than raw gigabytes, with capacity-aware pricing receding as the headline selling point.

The trend: Google One is evolving from a storage plan into a feature-bundle subscription whose perks periodically migrate down to the free tier as new ones take their place.

Shortly after we published this article, a reader informed us that Google Photos' Color Pop feature is locked behind a Google One paywall. I reached out to Google for confirmation but haven't heard back yet. https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Update: Google has confirmed that Color Pop in Google Photos will remain free for photos with depth info but will require Google One membership for photos without depth info. https://www.xda-developers.com/ ...

Called it. Locking new features behind a pay-wall is one thing, but doing that to EXISTING features is pure, unadulterated (and greedy AF) bullshit and the same bullshit Google pulled with YouTube Music. Pardon my language in this tweet, but fuck you, @googlephotos and @Google. h…
