As we get closer to Election Day we want to provide further clarity on policies we recently announced. Last week we said we'd prohibit ads that make premature declarations of victory. We also won't allow ads with content that seeks to delegitimize the outcome of an election (1/3)

For example, this would include calling a method of voting inherently fraudulent or corrupt, or using isolated incidents of voter fraud to delegitimize the result of an election. You can find more info and specifics in our Help Center here https://www.facebook.com/... (2/3)

Facebook says it will not allow ads that undermine the legitimacy of the election in an update to its policies it comes less than 24 hours after Trump repeatedly tried to undermine the election's integrity and refused to say he would accept the outcome https://www.nytimes.com/...

These changes apply to ads across Facebook and Instagram, and are effective immediately (3/3)

I'm hoping this is just a matter of implementing the policy at scale, cuz this is *exactly* what Facebook said was now banned: “For example, this would include calling a method of voting inherently fraudulent or corrupt” https://www.nytimes.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Facebook says it won't allow ads that cite “isolated incidents of voter fraud to delegitimize the result of an election.” (Organic content making similar claims is still permitted, though, and may simply get a contextual label.) https://twitter.com/...

Let's be honest. Even if @facebook intends to make these changes to their policies, they are half-measures, trying to maximize engagement while attempting to appear to be concerned about democracy. Even then, moderation will still be left up to the media and accounts like this. h…

banning Facebook ads that seek to delegitimise democratic elections is one of those policies that seem obviously good but raise questions as to why no-one thought to implement it before now https://twitter.com/...

this is not good enough. UNTIL @facebook PLEDGES TO PROACTIVELY REVIEW ALL ADS, this simply means they'll retroactively take down “violating” ads once they've been reported. aka, misinfo will still reach millions. new Facebook, same as the old Facebook. https://www.cnbc.com/...

Well this is SUPER interesting. This story dropped at *exact time* @FBoversight held its first press conference. Coincidence @nick_clegg? Or have you been reading our internal documents again? https://twitter.com/...

Facebook scrambling to deal with the issues the election is throwing up. Earlier this week on a briefing call I asked Nick Clegg whether there were circumstances where they might call an early halt to political ads. He said no https://twitter.com/...

Less than 4 hours and @Facebook look to have agreed one of our @FBoversight first demands. This is the power of activism. Now the same for organic! #ActNowZuck @carolecadwalla @shoshanazuboff @DerrickNAACP @rashadrobinson @JGreenblattADL @digitalsista https://www.cnbc.com/...

@MikeIsaac Based on their policy released in October 2019, regular posts that have misinformation about voting methods should be removed by Facebook. But its not being enforced. Instead, the labels.
  • @sacca Chris Sacca on x
@MikeIsaac It's meaningless until FB takes responsibility for what happens on the platform, paid or not. They took money to build groups that are now abused to widely disseminate harmful and destructive lies. At this point, a job at Facebook may as well come with a red hat.
  • @goldman Jason Goldman on x
@MikeIsaac I prefer to read this alongside the Debate Commission announcing new rules and Chris Wallace feeling sad. “How could we have know that a sociopath with a long record of breaking the rules would break the rules!”

Facebook confirmed that this new policy will apply to ads from politicians, potentially setting the company up for battles with Trump over his ads. https://twitter.com/...

This hews pretty closely to one of the demands presented by @FBoversight in our press conference today. https://twitter.com/...

@robleathern Rob, have you staffed up to do this moderation? By how much? How quickly will posts be removed after they've been reported? Will there be human moderation of reported posts? Will users posting disinformation be removed from the platform?

I feel like so much of this stuff lately falls into “YOU WEREN'T DOING THIS BEFORE??????” https://twitter.com/...

Further clarity on Facebook's prohibition of ads that include content attempting to delegitimize the election, building on what we said last week re: banning ads that include premature declarations of victory. https://twitter.com/...

Facebook updates its election related ads policy. As someone who's tracked these policy updates, I'd love for a centralized place to find these announcements and for all election-related policies. Maybe this could also be attached to the voting information center. https://twitter…

the important distinction here is *paid ads.* Plain ol' posts can still stay up, but they get labeled. we saw this last time Facebook made new rules and Trump undermined election integrity on his FB account the very next day.

What?!?! Well this is going to get VERY interesting. First Facebook's @OversightBoard accelerates its launch when details of @FBoversight leaked. And on day it launched, it conceded a first key demand! It's almost as if the only thing Facebook ever responds to is public pressure …

Ads are a small part of the problem, my man, a larger part are groups intentionally set up to spread misinformation, which your algorithms then boost because of what it thinks people should see. Just one example: https://popular.info/... https://twitter.com/...

Let's be clear Andy and not gaslight those of us working in civil rights. If bans aren't enforced then they aren't bans. After all the issues and failures that have been exposed at Facebook you're going to jump in with trivia. Damn.... https://www.google.com/... https://twitter.c…

As a reminder, despite Facebook's ban, less than 2 weeks ago TTP found Proud Boys using FB's fundraising tools (which FB profits from) while promoting their Portland event with a video FB didn't remove any of it until AFTER @letsgomathias contacted them https://www.huffpost.com/.…
