Google Meet adds noise cancellation on Android and iOS for G Suite Enterprise and Enterprise for Education customers, and adds attendance reports for schools

After rolling out to desktops in June, Google Meet can now filter out disruptive sounds, thanks to noise cancellation on Android and iOS.

Context & Ripple Effects

This closes the loop on a rollout that began when Google pushed Meet directly into Gmail for business and education users in April 2020, then shipped AI-powered noise cancellation to desktops in June, covered at the time in a deep dive on how the filtering model works. Mobile clients were the gap; Android and iOS users on the top G Suite tiers are the last cohort to get it.

The timing matters because Meet was being repositioned from an enterprise add-on into a default communication layer inside Gmail during peak remote-work adoption — and the same announcement adds attendance reports aimed squarely at the education accounts Google had just wired into Gmail.

First-order effects

  • G Suite Enterprise and Enterprise for Education customers on phones and tablets now get the same noise filtering as desktop users, removing the last device-based quality gap within paying accounts.
  • Schools on Enterprise for Education gain attendance reports natively in Meet, replacing manual roll-taking during remote classes.

Second-order effects

  • Bundling hygiene features into paid G Suite tiers rather than shipping them free raises the switching cost versus standalone rivals like Zoom, whose Meet-style layout Google had already copied in the Gmail integration.
  • For education IT buyers, native attendance data makes Meet more of a records system than a pure call tool, pressuring competing school-video offerings to match administrative reporting, not just call quality.

Third-order effects

  • Once basic audio cleanup becomes table stakes, differentiation shifts up the stack — the pattern the corpus itself shows continuing through 2022 Workspace updates adding look-and-sound controls and automated transcriptions and toward Duet AI note-taking and summaries in 2023, turning meetings from something to transmit into something to mine.
  • If the tiered-rollout cadence holds, premium AI meeting features become a recurring upsell lever for productivity suites, with each new capability gated by the same Enterprise-tier structure this mobile release follows.

The trend: Video conferencing is moving up a value ladder from connection reliability to AI-assisted meeting capture, with vendors like Google parceling each rung out by subscription tier and platform over successive releases.

Google announces Google Meet meetings in G Suite Enterprise for Education will now generate an emailed attendance report when they end. Reports include how long a student was on the call, and when they joined and left. https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/ ... (@GoogleForEdu) #ed…
