Google announces Workspace updates, including AI-powered tools to control how users look and sound on Meet and automated transcriptions of Meet meetings

Making your Meet meetings a little better  —  There's a good chance you've spent much of the last two-plus years sitting at home …

The Verge David Pierce

Context & Ripple Effects

This 2022 announcement sits early in Google's multi-year build-out of Meet as an AI surface. It follows the 2021 desktop refresh that introduced background replacement and the "smart canvas" push to weave Meet deeper into Docs and Workspace, and it adds two new primitives: AI controls over how users look and sound on calls, and automated meeting transcriptions.

The arc since then confirms the direction: the transcription feature grew into Duet AI taking notes, summarizing mid-meeting, and attending on a user's behalf in 2023, and by 2024 Google had shipped automatic English-language note-taking to select Workspace customers. What launched as a convenience feature is now the foundation of Google's meeting-agent play.

First-order effects

  • Meet users gain real-time control over their on-call appearance and audio, lowering the barrier for camera-on participation — the direct successor to the background replacement Google shipped in 2021.
  • Workspace customers get automated Meet transcriptions out of the box, turning ephemeral calls into searchable text records for the first time.

Second-order effects

  • Transcription creates the data layer Google later monetized: the 2023 Duet AI note-taking and meeting-attendance features and the 2024 selective rollout of auto-notes all presuppose the transcript pipeline announced here.
  • Once transcripts are standard, meeting value shifts toward the post-call artifact — pushing Google's Workspace suite (Docs, Chat, Gmail's later "Help me write") to compete on what happens to meeting content, not just the call itself.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, the video call stops being the unit of work: agents that attend, transcribe, and summarize meetings — as Duet AI's 2023 roadmap explicitly proposed — restructure collaboration around delegated presence, with the transcription infrastructure announced in 2022 as its prerequisite.

The trend: Video conferencing is shifting from a live-only medium to an AI-mediated one, with Google layering appearance controls, transcription, and eventually attending agents onto Meet year over year.
