Apple says it will open its online store in India on September 23

Apple announced today that it plans to open its online store in India on September 23.  The expansion will bring direct sales and an improved shopping experience to customers in the region for the first time.

Context & Ripple Effects

This closes a loop that started when India relaxed rules mandating local production, clearing Apple to begin selling devices online without a domestic manufacturing footprint first. Tim Cook then committed at the February shareholder meeting to an online store this year with physical stores to follow, and August reporting fleshed out the plan: launch next month, then two retail stores starting in Mumbai.

The September 23 launch is the first step of that sequence — the digital storefront arrives ahead of brick-and-mortar, giving Apple a direct sales channel in one of its fastest-growing markets while the physical buildout waits.

First-order effects

  • Indian customers can buy directly from Apple for the first time, moving purchases off third-party resellers and onto Apple's own pricing, financing, and trade-in terms.
  • Apple gains first-party customer data and margin on every Indian sale instead of splitting it with distributors.

Second-order effects

  • Local authorized resellers and multi-brand retailers now compete head-on with the brand they sell, pressuring their margins on iPhones and Macs.
  • The online store becomes the demand-building layer for the planned Mumbai and Bangalore stores — foot traffic and service appointments routed through Apple's own funnel.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds — regulatory relaxation enabling sales, sales justifying stores — India shifts from an export-manufacturing base to a full first-party retail market for Apple, with the physical-store timeline (already slipping under COVID-19 delays) as the pacing constraint.

The trend: Apple is converting India's relaxed sourcing rules into an owned retail stack — online first, physical stores second — turning a manufacturing-friendly market into a direct-sales one.

While it's good to see Apple's online store in India, what I really wish is they bring their support here. Their third-party support in India is almost insulting after what you pay for the devices, and that breaks the “experience” Apple claims to sell. https://www.apple.com/...

Years and years after e-commerce exploded in India, Apple will finally let people in the country buy directly from https://apple.com/. Indian pricing is still a rip-off, however, so if you want to buy Apple products, get them from the US. https://twitter.com/...

Recently Apple changed the wording on its online store page from “Genius Support” to “Apple Support,” which I thought was curious. Now we see the same on India's store page. Does “Genius” perhaps not localize well, & consistent branding is more important? https://www.apple.com/..…
