Kuo: first ARM-based Macs will be a 13" MacBook Pro and a revamped 24" iMac, coming in Q4 or Q1 2021; all new Mac models will have ARM CPUs starting in 2021

Apple plans to introduce its Arm-based custom designed chips for Macs at WWDC, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a note to investors today …

If the plan is really to release the first ARM Mac this year, I honestly think it's possible they'd reveal that hardware tomorrow as part of telling the story of *why* switching to Apple chips will be great https://9to5mac.com/...

This is surprising if it's true. I had fully assumed an entry-level 12" MacBook, not a Pro, for ARM. That seemed to make way more sense? https://twitter.com/...

@mgsiegler @MaxWinebach Offering that is one of the key things they could do for margin. A big advantage over ARM is that integration (though 5G affords Intel a chance). The work in “connected standby” (power nap) already in macOS is a precursor to this.

I wasn't planning on getting a new MacBook Pro until a redesign, but if they do an ARM chip later this year, I'm all in. Hopefully they'll add LTE to the laptop as well. I feel like it's kinda needed at this point. https://twitter.com/...

This is unexpected, an ARM iMac would definitely not be what we thought. Perhaps this iMac will be teased with the ARM transition and come out later this year 🧐 maybe it'll also feature miniLED if it's coming later https://twitter.com/...

    > Kuo confirms that an all-new design iMac is launching imminently, and it will apparently be Apple's last new Mac featuring an Intel CPU. They must either have killer emulation, an X86 coprocessor or expect a lot from the developers they are treating like irrelevant assets. http…

It does note farther down: “Looking further out, Kuo expects an all-new form factor MacBook to go into production in the middle of the next year: this could be the previously rumored 12-inch ARM MacBook.” Still, wild MBP would get ARM before MB or MBA — positioning it at high end

Wow, ARM may go right to MacBook Pro (and iMac)? Skipping the less powerful Macs (and, sadly, dimming hopes of the return of the 12-inch MacBook) for now. Apple must feel pretty confident in those chips (as they should)... https://9to5mac.com/...

Everybody thinking that the ARM Macs are just going to be the lowest of the low end — nuh-uh. If Apple's finally ready to do this, it's because they have a chip roadmap that can knock it out of the park https://twitter.com/...

Kuo says the first ARM Mac will be a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro replacement, followed by an iMac. Weirdly, the obvious choice — the Air — isn't mentioned. https://9to5mac.com/...

Looking like any possible hardware has been scrapped for WWDC tomorrow 🤔 Might be wrong about this one. Would love to be wrong! I'll be surprised with all of you, either way!
  • @maxwinebach Max Weinbach on x
I had two sources tell me no hardware for WWDC tomorrow. They aren't on WWDC related teams but heard it through the Apple grapevine. I'd take this with a grain of salt, but thought it was worth mentioning.

Personally am excited about tvOS updates tomorrow, the new Watch sleep tracking will be interesting to try (has been in testing for nearly 2 years), and of course the Arm switch. Never really had hopes for a big iOS 14 update.
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
I would say the idea is it will work if you go to sleep with 30% battery left, then you charge it in the morning when you wake up get ready etc. The Watch charges quick and now lasts about 1.5 days, so it should be fine. https://twitter.com/...

If there's no Apple Car controlled by Apple Glasses demo tomorrow I'm going to be really bummed.

Thinking about WWDC, a step-change for me and my apps would be: • Tear down barriers between AppKit & UIKit • Enable mouse capture & external displays on iPad • Expand PencilKit to Catalyst & add stencils • Custom UI/Non-UI Extension points • More & multi-colored SF Symbols

“We thought Apple realized that developers made the platform, but this incident has explicitly made clear that Apple sees developers as a source of revenue only,” said Aaron Vegh, a longtime software developer. “And that's a difficult pill to swallow.” https://www.bloomberg.com/.…

I'm guessing Apple won't announce a Mac transition from x86 to ARM. They'll announce a Mac transition from Intel to Apple. https://twitter.com/...

Apple will walk into WWDC facing some of its biggest pushback ever from the developer community since the App Store launched in 2008. My WWDC 2020 Preview on that and what to expect: https://www.bloomberg.com/...
