NEW: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co confirms our report it will build a chip plant in Arizona as U.S. concerns grow re dependence on Asia for the tech. TSMC said will spend $12B & hire >1,600, targeting production in 2024. Will be small facility tho https://www.wsj.com/...

How will TSMC maintain its perceived neutrality now that US is pressuring it to make chips in the US? Build a corresponding plant in mainland China? https://twitter.com/...

Who controls the production of advanced semiconductors will control the direction of commercial/military activity. This is a positive step to that end, it will diversify supply chains, it will bring more investment into the domestic industry, and it's big for US-Taiwan relations.…

This is a huge deal, particularly given the specific chips they'll manufacture. “TSMC's new plant would make chips branded as having 5-nanometer transistors, the tiniest, fastest and most power-efficient ones manufactured today.” https://twitter.com/...

But was the concern about dependence on “Asia” (in this case Taiwan) or about dependence on China? https://twitter.com/...

NEW: Taiwan's TSMC is set to announce plans to build an advanced chip factory in Arizona as U.S. concerns grow about dependence on Asia for the critical tech. Just weeks ago, Intel said it wanted to build a plant with the Pentagon https://www.wsj.com/... w @bobdavis187 @asafitch

@Techmeme This is vey cool, but I won't truly get excited until the factory is actually cranking out chips. We've been through similar announcements before, and they just end up being empty promises for publicity.

LR @RepMcCaul: “This is welcome news as we work to put America at the cutting edge of semiconductor manufacturing. The US and our partners must shore up this vital supply chain and reduce our collective exposure to malign activity by the #CCP and its companies like #Huawei.” http…

WSJ says TSMC will build its next U.S. fab in Arizona, not Camas. https://www.wsj.com/...

The @WSJTech claims that TSMC has agreed to build a leading-edge fab in Arizona joining fabs from @Intel, @Microchip, and others in the Silicon Desert. That's huge for the US and Arizona. Production slated for 2023. https://www.wsj.com/...
