Shopify and Pinterest partner to let Shopify merchants upload their catalogs to Pinterest and turn products into shoppable Product Pins

Shopify merchants in the U.S. and Canada are now able to share their products to about 350 million Pinterest users, the companies announced Thursday.

Bloomberg Maria Jose Valero

Context & Ripple Effects

Pinterest has been assembling its shopping stack for years: it opened Shop The Look product tagging to all businesses in 2018, then made merchant Catalogs generally available in 2019. What was missing was a pipeline of small-business inventory at scale — the long tail that never manually uploaded a catalog.

First-order effects

  • Shopify merchants in the U.S. and Canada can now push their entire product catalogs into shoppable Product Pins, putting their inventory in front of roughly 350 million Pinterest users without building separate storefronts or feeds.
  • Pinterest gets the merchant-side plumbing solved by borrowing Shopify's base instead of onboarding sellers one by one, while Shopify deepens its role as the connective tissue between stores and discovery platforms.

Second-order effects

  • The integration sets a template rivals must match: TikTok followed with its own Shopify partnership for in-feed ads, and Twitter launched a Shopify sales channel app, turning Shopify connectors into table stakes for social platforms chasing commerce revenue.
  • Consistent with Pinterest's earlier position that it would not take a cut of transactions but would instead monetize through promotion, the deal pushes merchants toward paid amplification of Pins rather than a new commission line.

Third-order effects

  • If every major social platform keeps wiring into Shopify, merchants' storefront data becomes infrastructure the platforms depend on — shifting leverage toward whoever owns the product catalog and away from any single discovery surface, a pattern later echoed when Pinterest signed Amazon as its first ads partner to deepen brand supply.

The trend: Social platforms are converging on Shopify as the default commerce backend, competing for merchant integrations while monetizing attention around transactions they never touch.
