Netflix's upgrade push is the capex side of a strategy it has run for a decade: Open Connect, its in-house CDN of 17,000 servers across 158 countries, exists precisely so streaming demand can be absorbed on hardware the company controls rather than rented transit. The pandemic turns that private buildout from an efficiency play into a capacity emergency.
