Our source confirms Apple's plans to put a 3D depth camera on the back of the iPhone.  Here's what it'll do.

Context & Ripple Effects

This report closes a loop that has been open since 2017, when Fast Company first reported Apple was testing a rear-facing 3D laser system for depth detection and autofocus. Bloomberg then tracked the sensor slipping from a 2019 iPhone target to a staged rollout: an iPad Pro module in H1'20 followed by higher-end 2020 iPhones, with an AR/VR headset and glasses positioned behind them.

The timing matters because rivals have been faking what Apple wants to measure — Facebook's 3D photos used AI to synthesize make-believe depth out of ordinary portrait shots. A true rear depth camera would give Apple measured geometry rather than inferred depth, which is the difference between a photo filter and an AR platform.

First-order effects

  • At least one iPhone in this year's lineup ships with hardware-level scene depth on the back, so AR apps and camera effects can be built on measured distance data instead of algorithmic guesses.

The trend: Phone cameras are shifting from capturing flat images to measuring scenes, turning depth sensing into the hardware foundation for consumer AR.
