Facebook rolls out Facebook 3D photos that use AI to add make-believe depth to iPhone portrait mode shots

What if you could peek behind what's in your photos, like you're moving your head to see what's inside a window?  That's the futuristic promise of Facebook 3D photos.

The 3D Photos launch is the third step in Facebook's slow build-out of immersive feed media: it first let people upload and view 360-degree photos on iOS and Android in 2016, then added in-app 360 capture and Cover Photo support in 2017. What changes here is that depth no longer requires a special capture format — a neural net synthesizes parallax from ordinary iPhone portrait mode shots.

  • Users with dual-lens iPhones gain interactive, head-parallax photos directly in the News Feed, giving Facebook a new native content type that plain images and video don't offer.
  • Apple's portrait mode hardware becomes an input pipeline for Facebook's feature: the depth data those cameras capture is now consumed by a social platform rather than staying inside the Camera app.
