Apple adds universal purchases for iOS and macOS apps to the Xcode 11.4 beta, letting developers bundle apps

Juli Clover / MacRumors :

Context & Ripple Effects

This beta feature extends a bundling push Apple has been building for years: back in October 2018 it let developers sell up to ten apps per bundle and mix free apps with auto-renewable subscriptions (expanded app bundles), and earlier still it wired cross-device purchasing through tools like tvOS support in iTunes Link Maker. Universal purchases in Xcode 11.4 close the remaining gap — until now, an iOS sale and a macOS sale were two separate transactions even for the same app.

The payoff arrives quickly: by late March Apple had rolled the option out generally, letting developers bundle macOS, iOS, tvOS, watchOS, and iPadOS apps with shared in-app purchases (the full universal-purchase rollout). For a Mac App Store long criticized for thin catalogs, opening it to iOS developers' existing titles is the structural point of the move.

First-order effects

  • Developers shipping on both platforms can now charge once for iOS and macOS versions of the same app and share in-app purchases between them, removing the double-charge friction that previously pushed buyers toward whichever platform they bought on first.

Second-order effects

  • iOS-first developers gain a low-cost path onto the Mac App Store via Catalyst-style ports bundled with their existing iPhone/iPad listings, swelling the Mac catalog and pressuring Mac-only developers who now compete with apps priced as a single cross-platform purchase.

Third-order effects

  • If universal purchases become the default packaging model, Apple's platforms converge toward one purchase-and-subscription ledger per customer across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Watch, and TV — shifting developer strategy from per-platform pricing to per-customer entitlements.

The trend: App Store economics are consolidating around cross-platform bundles and shared subscriptions, erasing the old boundary between buying software for a Mac and buying it for an iPhone.

    Universal Purchase for Mac/iOS apps! 😱 https://twitter.com/...

This screams to me that Apple was wholly unprepared for the needs of Catalyst developers, and scrambled to roll this out before next WWDC. Universal Purchase was rumored to not be coming for another 2 years in the Marzipan roadmap. This is such great news

I have mixed feelings about this. It's great that this is now possible. But higher Mac app prices have helped many developers of one-time purchase apps to generate enough revenue to stay in business. This might become harder now. https://twitter.com/...

Apple reverses course on one of the biggest complaints about merged Catalyst Mac/iOS apps. My story pointing this out from October: Apple's Merged iPad, Mac Apps Leave Developers Uneasy, Users Paying Twice https://www.bloomberg.com/... https://twitter.com/...

It's official: any Mac app can transition to shared purchase with iOS, iPadOS, watchOS and tvOS. If this is the only change coming to Catalyst before WWDC, then Apple chose the right thing to focus on https://developer.apple.com/ ...
