Apple adds tvOS apps to iTunes Link Maker web app, enabling app purchases from iOS devices

Context & Ripple Effects

This lands mid-way through the Apple TV App Store's build-out: a year earlier Apple added a Categories section and then Top Charts to the store, with games emerging as its most popular category, while channel apps like CBS All Access kept expanding the catalog. The gap was commerce — until now, buying a tvOS app meant doing it on the TV itself.

Adding tvOS apps to iTunes Link Maker closes that loop from the other side: an iPhone or iPad can now initiate an Apple TV app purchase via web links. It is an early plumbing step toward what Apple later formalized as universal purchase across macOS, iOS, tvOS, watchOS, and iPadOS.

First-order effects

  • tvOS developers gain a purchase path that no longer requires the customer to be sitting at the Apple TV, so iPhone-driven discovery can convert directly into living-room installs.

Second-order effects

  • With purchases flowing from any iOS device, the App Store's ranking and merchandising surfaces — the Categories and Top Charts sections Apple added in late 2015 — start measuring demand generated off-TV, sharpening competition among tvOS developers for placement.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Apple's storefronts converge on a single account-level purchase graph across devices — the direction later confirmed by universal purchase bundling and by iTunes 12.6's cross-device rentals — making per-device stores a legacy structure.

The trend: Apple is consolidating app commerce into one cross-device purchase layer, with tvOS moving from an isolated TV store toward parity inside the iOS-driven App Store economy.
