This launch is the third act of AMD's deliberate climb up the desktop core-count ladder: the original 16-core Threadripper unveiled in May 2017 shipped that August with the 1950X flagship at $999, and Threadripper 2 pushed the ceiling to 32 cores on a 12nm process in mid-2018. Zen 2's 7nm node is what lets AMD re-cut that same 32-core peak into a $1,399/$1,999 two-step without abandoning the lower rung.

The move matters because it shows the price-per-core curve bending fast at the top of the desktop market — a trajectory the corpus confirms four years later when Threadripper 7000 stretches the line to 96 cores. Each generation, what was last cycle's halo part becomes this cycle's mid-tier.
