Last night out of the blue, we received an email from AMD, sharing some of the specifications for the forthcoming Ryzen Threadripper CPUs to be announced today.

This is the founding move of AMD's high-end desktop line: two years after Ryzen re-entered the mainstream, Threadripper takes the same Zen architecture into 12- and 16-core territory at $799-$999, with 4GHz Turbo to blunt the clock-speed objection. The line it launched has compounded steadily — Threadripper 2 pushed to 32 cores within a year, and the follow-on generations kept doubling down.

Seven years later the arc is legible: Threadripper 7000 tops out at 96 cores, while the 16-core count that defined this first launch has migrated down-market entirely — AMD's 2024 flagship Ryzen 9 9950X ships 16 cores at $649. That trajectory is what makes this $999 debut price worth marking.
