This is a repeat of a known Apple pattern: unannounced Mac hardware surfacing inside pre-release macOS builds. Three years earlier, the final version of macOS Sierra shipped with images of a then-unreleased MacBook Pro carrying Touch ID and an OLED function-key panel — hardware imagery embedded in an OS update ahead of the official reveal.
Here the second beta of macOS Catalina 10.15.1 contains icons that appear to depict a 16-inch MacBook Pro with slightly thinner bezels, matching the widely rumored machine. The find matters because it comes from Apple's own asset pipeline rather than supply-chain hearsay, and because the 16-inch model would be the first larger-screen Pro since the 15-inch line.
First-order effects
Buyers weighing a 15-inch MacBook Pro purchase now have a concrete signal from Apple's own software to wait for the rumored 16-inch model, pressuring near-term sales of the current top configuration.
Second-order effects
Apple's expanding public beta programs widen the leak surface: every additional tester running Catalina betas increases the odds that unannounced product assets surface before marketing is ready, forcing tighter asset hygiene or later-stage icon insertion.
Third-order effects
If the pattern holds — Sierra's embedded images, these Catalina icons, and later release-candidate builds like the macOS Tahoe 26.7 RC referencing unreleased products — pre-release OS builds stay a standing early-intel channel for Apple hardware, and bezel reduction remains the visible design lever, echoing the thinner-body direction of the 12-inch MacBook Air redesign.
The trend: Apple's pre-release macOS builds keep functioning as an accidental disclosure channel for unannounced Macs, with each find feeding the rumor cycle that shapes buyer timing ahead of launches like the eventual 14- and 16-inch Pro redesign reported by Kuo.
And looks like there is an escape key to the left of the Touch Bar. No such space left of the Touch Bar on the image for the 15-inch model. (the one without the red circle). pic.twitter.com/kOUjv9ZcY2
October event was expected to feature: - new iPads Pro, which are either ho-hum spec bumps or delayed to next year; - TV+, which has already been featured in two other events; - AirPods Pro, which are cool but not necessarily event-worthy on their own;

I don't necessarily believe Apple put this in as a deliberate hint about what's coming (may be a simple mistake), but the timing - showing up in a macOS beta on the day that everybody was expecting an October event announcement - is awfully suspicious. https://twitter.com/...
- new Mac Pro, which likewise already had an event; - 16-inch MacBook, which - if it's mostly a keyboard fix - is not necessarily something they want to talk about a lot on stage. So it's not ridiculous to think they'll just launch everything via press releases.
Looks completely legit to me, not sure why there is any dispute over its authenticity. @rsgnl verified the files are in the beta., clearly slimmer bezels, clearly bigger screen. Real question is if a MacBook Pro with a slightly bigger screen and new AirPods warrants a keynote.
MacBookPro16,1 does NOT appear to be for a 2019 model, so the 16-inch MacBook Pro icon rumor appears to be legitimate. File was created a week ago as @eslivka pointed out to me. Story: https://www.macrumors.com/... Nice find @MacGeneration/@finnocente/@stephmouss! https://twitter…
