Amazon's Alexa-powered ambitions contradict its promises to protect your privacy

I bet whichever department developed this was pissed that “Amazon Ring” was already taken ... by a creepy surveillance doorbell cozy with the cops https://twitter.com/...

Catching up on Amazon news. I need this ring for so many reasons and so many jokes. https://www.theverge.com/...

I should understand what the hell Amazon is doing with devices... but I don't. My best guess is that they want to become the Ikea of electronic devices. https://www.techmeme.com/...

Because Google Glass wasn't creepy enough on its own, Amazon announced its own set of smart glasses that ship with a creepy smart assistant. This way, the glasses record all the time, rather than when you enable them. 🙃 Amazon, putting Google to shame, once again https://twitter.…

Look at those thick temples. No wonder Amazon kept showing these things on people's faces (you couldn't make out the thickness). pic.twitter.com/AFzOMrshRi

The Echo Loop is kind of neat, but I agree that Amazon should be shipping this as one of its Day1 beta program things. It's like the nerdiest class ring ever. https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/...

I used to feel embarrassed about wearing AirPods, but not in a world where Amazon Echo Frames exist

Here's me wearing the Amazon smart glasses. They're surprisingly light and direct sound to your ears quite effectively while allowing you to hear the world around you still idk if they're my style tho tbh — not big enough ! https://twitter.com/...

Amazon created this category and took both Google the AI comment and Apple the device company by surprise. And now they have an end-point - which was an existential worry for both Amazon and FB ever since Apple & Google won smartphones. Success! But. What do people do with it?

“The Echo Buds will work just like any other Alexa device — say the “Alexa” wake word, and you'll be able to ask any questions, just like a regular Echo. The big difference here, of course, is that they'll work outside of your house.” #VoiceFirst @verge https://www.theverge.com/.…

I wrote “Amazon wants to set Alexa free” earlier, breaking the digital assistant outside of just your home. Amazon just went and launched Echo Buds, an Alexa ring for your fingers, and Alexa glasses. Amazon definitely wants to set Alexa free! https://www.theverge.com/... https://…

Amazon faces the same wireless headphone dilemma as every other company. Make them look too similar to AirPods and you are labeled a copycat. Make them look too different and they won't sell because people want to be seen wearing AirPods. pic.twitter.com/3tJJO05x8Q

Amazon is massively proliferating/iterating Alexa. Big companies do that. SVPs hire VPs and PMs and partnership people and products pour out of the pipe But Still not entirely clear what practical strategic value Alexa has yet. It's still option value https://www.ben-evans.com/..…

One could say that Alexa has achieved some level of product-market fit for consumers, but not for Amazon.

Every year around this time, Amazon walks onto a stage with a bag full of “things”, unties it and starts throwing them against the wall. No one has any idea if what they hurled is genuine and if it will ever stick. https://twitter.com/...

This thing, which costs $200 in an absolute FU to Apple and Sonos, is the most interesting thing Amazon showed off today IMO https://twitter.com/...

Definitely will challenge HomePod's positioning. Will be interesting if Apple has a lower priced HomePod coming. If they are serious about home audio they kind of have to. https://twitter.com/...

Amazon has crammed a soundbar into an Echo speaker roughly the size of ice bucket. It will go on sale for $199.99 and is avail for pre-order. It will also stream sound from your fire TV in Dolby Atmos. It sounds really good.

Alexa has hardware switches for mute button and camera button so if you turn off recording, it really turns off recording, says Dave Limp at the Amazon product launch. CNET live blog. https://live.cnet.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Amazon just launched a super interesting modular Echo Flex. You can plug it into anywhere in your home to get Alexa, and you can slot hardware accessories into it like a nightlight or motion sensor, and it's just $24.99. Details: https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/.…

Very soon, product specs like those below will be a footnote in these evaluations. The hardware is somewhat important, but what matters here is the assistant inside. And that will only grow in importance. https://twitter.com/...

These are tempting. Price is great. They are cheaper than AirPods, Jabra Elite 65t, and PowerBeats Pro. Plus they have noise isolation from Bose and sweat resistance. The only question is whether or not they will stay in my ears when running (and of course Bluetooth performance) …
  • @backlon Dieter Bohn on x
I listened to the Echo Buds. They sound good I think! The noise reduction is great, though. These are going to be big, literally and metaphorically. https://www.theverge.com/... https://twitter.com/...
