Context & Ripple Effects

TradeLens began as a Maersk-IBM container-tracking pilot, was commercialized through a dedicated joint venture, and went global in 2018 claiming 94 clients and 154M+ shipping events. The addition of Japan's ONE and Germany's Hapag-Lloyd is the moment it stops being a Maersk project and becomes an industry utility: five of the top six carriers, over half of world container volume, writing to one ledger.

That concentration is also what made the platform fragile — by late 2022 IBM and Maersk were planning to shut TradeLens down, with Maersk blaming insufficient industry collaboration. This 2019 milestone is therefore both the high-water mark of carrier buy-in and the setup for the neutrality problem that ultimately undid it.

  • ONE and Hapag-Lloyd gain read/write access to a shared event stream covering more than half of global container traffic, replacing bilateral EDI integrations for those lanes.
  • Any shipper, forwarder, or port not yet on TradeLens now faces a network where the majority of carrier-side data lives behind one login.

  • The one top-six carrier still outside the platform faces mounting pressure to join or become the visible gap in customers' end-to-end visibility dashboards.
  • Competing carriers must weigh joining a platform whose commercial owner, Maersk, is also their largest rival — the exact tension that resurfaced when Maersk later cited lack of collaboration in winding the service down.

  • Consortium infrastructure owned by a dominant participant struggles to recruit direct competitors, pointing toward neutral-governance or industry-body ownership as the viable structure for shared logistics data layers.
  • If carrier-led ledgers keep stalling, digitization of shipping documentation shifts instead to shippers, forwarders, and port authorities building their own interoperability standards above the carriers.

The trend: Blockchain supply-chain consortia live or die on governance neutrality: TradeLens scaled fastest once rival carriers joined, and collapsed once they declined to build on a competitor's platform.
