AMD announces five Ryzen 3000 Series CPUs, including the Ryzen 9 3900X, a new mainstream desktop 4.6 GHz chip with 12 cores, coming July 7 for $499

Two years ago, twelve cores on a desktop cost $799: AMD's Threadripper 1920X launched as a high-end-desktop part at that price with a 3.5 GHz base clock. Today at Computex, Lisa Su is putting the same core count into the mainstream lineup — the Ryzen 9 3900X at $499 and 4.6 GHz — built on the new Zen 2 chiplet microarchitecture.

That collapse in price-per-core is the headline of this announcement, but the deeper story is architectural: the chiplet design announced here became the template AMD has reused every generation since, from the Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 chips in 2020 through the AM5-era Ryzen 7000 lineup up to 16 cores.

First-order effects

  • Buyers get high-end-desktop-class core counts at roughly half the 2017 Threadripper price, and Intel's mainstream desktop stack is immediately undercut on cores per dollar at the $499 tier.
