Google says Cloud SQL will support Microsoft's SQL Server later this year and that it is launching a managed service of Microsoft's Active Directory in alpha

Google has been building toward Windows-world credibility for years: it brought Windows Server to general availability on Compute Engine in 2015, then took Cloud SQL to a second generation with up to 10TB per instance and graduated its database lineup from beta in 2016. What was missing was the two workloads enterprises actually run their businesses on: SQL Server and Active Directory.

The move lands squarely against Microsoft, which had been tightening its own grip by updating Azure's managed services for SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL the year before. By hosting Microsoft's own database and directory products, Google is betting that enterprises will lift-and-shift existing stacks rather than rewrite them for Azure.

  • Enterprises with SQL Server estates gain a credible non-Azure home for those databases later this year, while IT teams can pilot Google's alpha managed Active Directory instead of self-managing domain controllers on VMs.
