This rollout closes a gap Instagram left open since Facebook shipped Automatic Alternative Text on iOS in 2016 — the same AI image-description technology existed inside the family two years before it reached Instagram's feed. Twitter took the complementary path back then, letting users write their own image descriptions in its mobile apps.

Instagram is now combining both approaches in one tool: AI-generated descriptions where none exist, plus author-supplied text where users provide it. The move also lands amid a stretch of feature rollouts from the company — Stories type mode, Nametag, comment controls — as it iterates on who can perceive and interact with posts.
