Intel unveils 28-core Xeon W-3175X CPU for workstations, with an unlocked multiplier running at up to 4.3 GHz in burst mode, coming in December

Intel on Monday officially introduced its 28-core processor for extreme workstations that it teased first back in June.

Intel's workstation line had been capped at 18 cores since the Xeon-W launch in August 2017 and the Core i9-7980XE, which paired 18 cores with a locked multiplier and a $1,999 price. The W-3175X breaks both ceilings at once: 28 cores plus an unlocked multiplier, something Xeon parts have not offered.

The announcement lands the same day Intel refreshes Skylake-X with seven new 8-to-18-core parts, so the 28-core chip is deliberately positioned above — not instead of — the existing high-end desktop stack. The June tease made this a known quantity; December is when buyers can actually spend on it.
