Google Translate expands offline translation support to 59 languages including Italian, Greek, Norwegian, and Swahili

Offline translation is a recurring front in Google's Translate strategy: back in 2016 the product brought offline mode to iOS alongside tap-to-translate inside Android apps, and that same year its language roster hit 103, covering what Google claimed was 99% of the online population. The 59-language offline expansion announced here extends that connectivity-free capability deeper into European and African languages like Italian, Greek, Norwegian, and Swahili.

The move matters because offline support is what makes translation usable in the places where the remaining language gaps concentrate — markets with expensive or unreliable data. Google kept widening this aperture afterward, adding 24 more languages in 2022 with regional dialects from India, South America, and Africa, before the PaLM 2-powered 110-language expansion in 2024 became its largest ever.
